    Default Back Injuries

I've been skimming for quite some time and recently herniated a disc in my back. I've been out for two months now, depressing to say the least. Anyhow, I'm wondering if anyone here has ever had, or known someone that skims or surfs that has had this injury and how long it took to he/she to get back in the water.

    good luck with it
Safety is for people who don't know what they are doing.

my bottom disk is almost all the way worn down do to the fact my legs are about a half inch off of eachother

    i see a chiro once a month

my physical therapist showed me a work out to help

you basically stand straight up and lift one of your legs straight up from the ground but keeping your knee straight. dont lift it out just straight up kinda into yourself...you should feel your lower back tighten up....hope that was clear but its hard to explain

Yea my back is all fracked up. I have to stretch it constantly before and after any activity. I have slight pain everyday when I wake up anyway though. I have anti-inflammatories for when it hurts a lot. I have gotten x-rays showed nothing, I haven't gone for an MRI yet though.

God luck with your back, this shit never goes away.

The very first time I went skimming I totally threw my back out. Made it home and couldn't get out of bed for two days. I would have th crawl to the bathroom, and if I made any sudden movements my back would seize up and I would be in agony so bad I'd be crying. Never felt pain like that in my life. It healed pretty well in about two weeks, and now I ALWAYS stretch before and during my skim sessions.

I broke my back about 4 years ago. Riding trails on a BMX and got flipped over the back (trying to put too much boost into an air to triple a set) I landed on my shoulders while still kinda rotating backwards. my body compressed so much my balls hit me in the face (you can all laugh now!!) I heard a very loud crack. and then the lights went out. when i woke up my foot bone was no longer connected to my head bone!!

Obviously, it hurt. and, to be honest, i havn't had a single day free from back pain since. The docs wanted to operate, but when they told me i would probably never surf again I told them to get f***ed and left the hospital that day!! since then i have been my own doctor and physio!!

My only advice is to stay as active as possible. I notice that if i have a few lazy days, especially if i'm sat at my computer (slouched over looking at pics of naked Brazo chicks) my back gets worse. If i'm out and about and biking and surfing and stuff, the pain is reduced. if the back hurts, take it easy... once the pain subsides, exercise!! sit ups. star jumps. touching toes. and stretch a lot. in morning when you wake up, night times before bed. any time you get alone!! buy yourself a "swiss ball" an inflatable Gym ball. they are the best thing you can buy for back pain/stretching. Also, have a look at some Yoga, but be careful, as some "western yoga" is actually quite harsh on the back. always warm up before a surf/skim, I know it looks a bit gay on the beach, but it looks a lot more gay laying in bed, crying, holding a bottle of pills and a bong, cos you missed another seshy cos of your shonkey back!!!

just take it easy and it'll be fine. I would say to stay well away from pills and meds. none of them are any good for your blood system. Doctors just dole em out and don't really give two s***s. Maby anti-inflammatorys (Diclofenac?) have their place in reducing pain and allowing free movement... but if you are popping pills all day?? it's never a big look.

So, good luck and take it easy, but stay active.

ive never had the problem thru skimmin but ive thrown my lower back out before. it took about 2 weeks to get better. We were out at Nokomis bout a month ago and my buddy threw his out skimmin. he finally is better. i dont know if he actually herniated a disc but he was hurtin. the back is a bad place to mess up. worse ive had is some stingers fall on my back and some death waves pound me in the kidneys and back and knock the wind outta me. good luck.
