So I started skimming with a zap wedge large and got my basics on. but i feel that the zap wedge is sinking half way getting on the wave
should I get a better board or not?

May or may not be the board, but it sounds like all you need is more speed. Are you within the height/weight guidelines that zap lists? If so, try running faster and focus on speed loss prevention techniques (planing or pumping).
do u know how to drop step or r u throwing and then jumping on it?
yeah i get on the board by dropping it and then getting running to it with a little hop
Try running onto the board, one foot after another without Hopping.
Probably a speed problem, had this same issue when I was starting to skim, I started to do a 2 step drop and running faster and it went away...
Just waiting for a mate.
You are well within the weight requirements and although the Wedge is a beginner board, it does not mean that it won't be able to catch waves. Speed is everything!! Run faster, drop smoother, and step on quicker. Practice on that board you have as much as possible. If a wave is far out then practice planing. Everything comes down to practice. Always remember that buying the latest and greatest board won't change how you ride for the most part. Keep practicing!
Edit: Did I mention practice?
ok thanks for the advice u guys![]()
This is a great video to watch to learn how to drop. At 7:25 they discuss the one step drop. Lots of good stuff here.

Wow. That's the first time I've ever seen a how to video for sports online that actually had useful information.
