I can see both sides. The rider has such a small amount of control over the board (no brakes, reliable steering) yet is allowed to operate on the same roadway as vehicles that do have these safety devices. But coming from California, I'm not surprised

Only if you're a complete noobatron at downhill skating. That's just like saying a snowboarder can't stop because snowboards have no brakes. A decent longboarder has precise and total control, can pick lines within inches, and stop faster than a road cyclist if needed.

Me btw, and I suck. Guys can do this with no hands down:

While there are people that have control over their skateboards, I'm looking at it like the legislators. There are more noobs than pros. Just like there are people who can operate a car better than anyone else, they still have to look out for their's and other's safety while on public roadway.

As someone posted above, I don't think a small fine will stop anyone. "Over 10 miles and hour?" C'mon. I don't see cops running radar on skateboarders. Hopefully enforcers use their better judgement and if they see a noob bombing with the death-wobbles, they'll give them the ticket and not the guy in full leathers and a helmet.

good luck to the cops trying to catch them. This just sounds like fun. running from cops on a longboard. They'll have to make hybrid versions so people can steet skate after to elude poh leese officers.

I heard cocaine is illegal in LA. So you know, nobody does it there.

Not sure if this was LA county or city. If its county then we're banning skateboarding on all of world-class canyon roads in the Malibu hills
which is basically the world-recognized Mecca of the sport.

I'm flattered that you apparently think I make it look easy. Those are are 20% grade switchbacks. You have to hit your corner entry speed within a couple mph to clear them on that line and that speed. The amount that I slide the board scrubs off exactly as much speed as I need to get through and not a mile-per-hour more.

I don't want to hijack this thread with another embed, but if you wanna see me stop I'm happy to show you in order to educate another couch/keyboard-commentator on such a misunderstood sport. Here's a vid of my friend getting into a fluke crash, and you can see me throw an emergency stop at around 40mph (at the expense of that set of wheels). Also, check out the 50mph drift that I throw earlier in the vid. Yeah, not any precision involved there at all.

Kyle, the guy interviewed in the video said he was a little bummed that they cut off his sentences and made the feature prettyo ne sided. The spot caster posted does take a lot of precision and if you can predrift for those corners you can no doubt stop at that speeds. Malibu and other parts of L.A. county are so important to downhill skating, hopefully they don't actively ticket them.
