Free to be Oppressed?

So basically there is an all penguin suit tv channel in Egypt now. Apparently under the old government it was illegal to wear a burka on TV. Long story short there is a new all burka channel in Egypt and these women are saying they are no longer oppressed because they now have their freedom of speech.

I am confused here, because as a libertarian if you want to make a TV channel where everyone wears bed sheets then go right ahead, but I also feel like the hole burka thing is an oppression of women and that this is the beginning of extreme sharia law forming in Egypt.

thats because people in different parts of the world/ diff cultures have different views on what is oppression and liberty.

Many women like the burkas considering it is what they have grown up with and they have their own fashion/styles to go along with them that we just don't really notice because they all look the same.

the extreme sharia law stuff we see today if i understand correctly can be traced back to wahabi from egypt. most of the islamic world wasn't as extreme as parts of it are today say 150 or 200 years ago. ie you look at muslims in europe and the ones we see on tv here and we imagine most of the islamic world looks like what you show in the news clip whereas thats actually only a part of the picture. yes, i too am not happy with how they go around feeling entitled to do what they do and am especially unhappy with the spread of this type of islam, but like you said, if thats what they want to do then thats what they want to do.

that and its one channel there where they do this - probably just catering to their viewers. ie fox has some idiots like oriely while cnn has some socialists with no sense of reality like morgan.

lastly, if you really think about it, we look at them and say what an oppressive male dominated society. im pretty sure most of them look at how girls here run around in skimpy outfits and say the same thing. girls here will say no it makes me feel good, helps me fit into my social circles, etc. im sure they say the same thing over there. that and if you ever go over to egypt, libya, saudi arabia, etc. i hear those things are useful as shiz when a surprise sandstorm starts to pick up.
