I want to have a board that's able to handle big waves and go out into deeper water but preferably under $300. I was looking at the exile recruit and a couple victoria boards. I currently have a decent wave zone (gift)

In that price range, you're looking for used for an advanced board. Or you might find an older model new one on sale, that's how I got my polyvac for $300.
All messed up and slightly twisted.
Am I sick or am I gifted?
Alternatively, you could check out getting a Square: their boards are much cheaper than other "high end" brands and still pretty decent.
My first "high end" board was the Vic Ultra, still use it to this day and that was 4 years ago. I recommend this board over the recruit because, and no offense to Exile, 2 of my friends have one and the are just not as good as my vic ultra felt brand new, and one of them snapped in half from just pumping. This is just my opinion, but for the money i would defiantly say the Vic Ultra would be a good choice.
No, it's definitely the board.
Honestly no offense taken Super Toaster...Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. We'd love to change your mind if you ever want to give us the chance.
We've had way more positive feedback on the boards than negative so we must be doing something right...Honestly we're just stoked that so many people like our boards. We even got positive feedback from your friend that snapped the board he rode pretty darn hard for quite some time to be fair. I think he said that it was his favorite board ever...
Maineskim...there are a lot of options out there. Advanced riders typically tend to like stronger and stiffer boards something that would be comparable to an S-glass epoxy or double carbon fiber epoxy. You might want to look into a used board if you want those characteristics at your price range. If you want to buy new then it seems like you're pretty much on the right track.

Any board can snap.......waves have more power than you think. It's just the nature of the sport, much like surfing.

Don't get me wrong I aint saying not to get a Recruit or Exile for that matter, my Dude Cruise is my favorite board and the most fun board I have ever ridden, it's just something about the Recruit rubs me the wrong way. Maybe it's just to light for my taste.
No, it's definitely the board.
I have a large vic ultra for sale if you're interested.
Take a look at the slotstik 330, new price is...well $330.
Or if you want carbon look for a used one.
