Question custom ordering a exile recruit

there is a few things im unsure of: whether i should go 3/4 or 5/8 i know one has more float and i kind of had the 5/8 thin in my mind for awhile, also i was thinking of the functional performance finish (textured) because of weight/strength but when they say textured what do they mean? is the board rough feeling? and how much prep does the board need before traction application? i was thinking hybrid rocker because i like more maneuverability and finally the shape. hybrid or pro? i know a lot of it is preference but i have heard people loving the hybrid over the pro shape. also im 6'3 and weigh about 130-140. medium large? or just medium. i just really want to make sure i get this right and love my board.

    medium large ? medium

    hybrid shape ? pro shape

    5/8 > 3/4 ?

    FP(textured) > gloss ?

    hybrid rocker > domke rocker

PS. i have decided to send back my old victoria ultra and just ask for a refund for those who saw my last thread

i weigh 130 and ride a medium but thats just me.
the pro shape is more narrow so its more maneuverable if you want more float get the hybrid.
if you live somewere were the waves are far out or weaker get the 3/4 especialy if your new to skimming.
textured is lighter and stronger but you need to sand it down were you put the pads or they will fall off allot faster.
and i dont know much about domke rocker
    hope this helps!

I'd get a medium 3/4ths hybrid with hybrid rocker, especially after seeing how the waves up by SLO break.
I would aspire to be me if I wasn't already

yeah unfortunately all of the beaches near SLO and in SLO county are pretty weak. the best I've ever been to was a beach in Santa Barbara. but anyway everyone is telling me basically the same thing so i guess that's it. what is the color of the bottom since there isn't a choice for it, white?

famous last words. i thought the same thing. i was a twig at your age (6'2" 140), and never gained weight no matter what i did. by the end of college i finally managed to get up to 170 ish. however, within months of leaving college, i shot up 30-40 lbs.
All messed up and slightly twisted.

well like you said there is a lot of preference there. i for one prefer a pro shape cause i run fast and don't need the extra surface area plus its faster and more maneuverable . i also have 5/8 for the maneuverability as well. textured deck i think is a great choice if you really don't care so much about how your bored looks. it doesn't look as nice as the gloss but it will help you if your foot misses a pad or you missed a spot with wax. as for traction prep. its easy, a quick sand with 300 grit sand paper works great and you can't go wrong with freak pads.

personally this is what i like, but you have to take into consideration the power of your waves if they break close the beach or not for 5/8 or 3/4. texted or glossy depending on how nice you want your bored to look. and how fast you run which will tell you if you need a pro, hybrid, or again 3/4 or 5/8.

analyze your riding style and decide whats best for you! good luck

    medium large ? medium

    hybrid shape ? pro shape

    5/8 > 3/4 ?

    FP(textured) > gloss ?

    hybrid rocker > domke rocker

I think that a M would more than likely be just fine for you size wise. You could possibly still ride a ML, but it would more than likely feel a bit big. Since you're just getting into riding waves you would probably want to go with the hybrid shape.

The hybrid shapes are short than most boards and have a rounder more blunted nose. This makes it easier when trying to wrap waves, and also allows you to squeeze a little more speed out of the board when sliding out to waves. You could ride the pro shape, but you'll probably find that it's harder to ride and have more fun on a hybrid.

5/8 v. 3/4" is always a tough one and a lot of personal preference. Typically riders tend to like 3/4" when the waves are further from the beach or "softer" in general. It could help you maintain your speed though as you start trying to ride waves. 5/8" is geared more towards riders that want maximum maneuverability in good conditions.

The FP finish on the Recruits is actually different than the "textured" finish that we offer on the epoxy boards. While it does reduce weight it doesn't improve strength or durability like the textured finish does. The FP finish isn't quite as smooth as a gloss finish but you can put pads directly onto it.

You'll probably want to go with the hybrid rocker. The Domke rocker is flatter resulting in a faster board, but that also makes it slightly harder to ride. Since you're just getting into wave riding I think the hybrid rocker would most likely benefit you more.

Feel free to pm me or e-mail me at hank@exileskimboards.com if you have any other questions. Hope this helps!!

@Jkenney93..We typically estimate a week and half to two week to be safe in the summer time to build a board. A lot of times we can get them done sooner, but not always. Your board will be at your house Monday by 3! I'm e-mailing you a tracking number right meow. Thanks for the support buddy!

If you're buying it textured make sure you sand the board before putting on traction so it stays on. The pads won't stick well on the rough surface if not smoothed by sanding the spots you need traction on. You have get it textured if you want competition weight, too.

Off topic, but i've started to notice that the majority of people on here are young and crazy thin. is this really the case? it seems the vast majority of everyone on here is 14-18 and >5'9 but <150lbs. haha is this some kind of unspoken must have for this forum?

I just customed ordered a board and spent a good deal of time talking with Hank at Exile. Here are some things I learned by talking to him and reading their website. You can get the 3/4 and have the nose and tail tapered down to 5/8 to give you more manuverability yet keep the float. The textured finish isn't as tall/aggressive as old style Zap boards but does still need to be sanded for a few minutes to apply pads. They say it increases the durability of the board because now you don't have to worry about the smooth slick glossy finish cracking. It also makes the board a little lighter. The Domke rocker is a little flatter than the hybrid rocker and the Sam Stinnet (i think) rocker is has more curveature than the hybrid rocker. The hybrid shape allows for more surface area and therefore more float but still has almost a pro shape. Hope this helps. PM Hank and he can help you out, Exile has great customer service.

You never know. At 17 i was 6'1" 140lbs. At age 37 im 6'1" 140lbs. I can't seem to gain weight no matter what I do. Ok once in a great while I'll get up to 145 but my weight has always fluctuated between 135 and 145. So it can happen.

That's still fairly thin, I had noticed the same thing as Vince.

For reference, I'm barely 6' and almost 200 lbs

If you didn't snag yet, I'm going to recommend against snagging a Dude Cruise. I've owned one almost since it was first announced and while it's a cool little board, there are a lot of times I wish I was riding a hybrid. I get some good lines on the Cruise, but I could just as easily get the same lines on a hybrid, and the tail on the hybrid turns noticeably quicker IMO.

That being said my deck is textured. I don't think I could go back to gloss.
