    Default Surf Clothing Companies

Why are companies like billabong, volcom etc. sponsors of the vic wcs if they seem to want nothing to do with skimboarding. Even etnies sponsors Paulo and I haven't seen them sponsor a skim contest.

It's really all for profit. The same reason they sponsor athletes from other sports, to advertise it to the "average rider". When I used to skate I'd usually buy clothes from "skate brands", sort of because that's the popular thing among skaters. If they stick their fingers into skim boarding, they're hoping to make some money off of other riders. If it makes them money, they're going to do it. Kind of like how BZ makes skimboards.

    Lol this post.

So you are asking why they are sponsoring a SKIM contest, When they want NOTHING to do with skimboarding?
    So much contradiction batman.

If they wanted nothing to do with skimboarding then they WOULDN'T sponsor the contest.

PS Etnies has sponsored Green Eggs and Am for a couple years now.

They are called COMPANIES not CHARITY'S for a reason, they arnt going to pump money into a sport that isnt going to give them a large return on their investment.

I know that there in it for the money I'm just talking about their image. I mainly asked this because Billabong's facebook says: "Official Facebook page of Billabong We're into surf, skate, snowboarding and wakeboarding."

I was about to ask that too. It isn't big where I live but I'm thinking about all the lakes inland. It's definitely bigger but not like surf or skate.

I'm assuming thats because 90% of people on earth think skimboarding is throwing a piece of wood and chasing it down the beach..It wouldn't reflect well on the company

doesn't Hurley sponsor Blair? all the big guys have those big companies. I've always thought of lrg as sort of a skim brand, a lot of skimmers wear it and they sponsor a good amount of events, and that board collab thing with vic.
by sponsoring contest, they are hoping to win over skimmers to buy their shit

There are many companies which manufacture surf clothes but our company is the best in selling these type of clothes. You can buy all brands with the help of our company.

Lrg is not a Skim brand and in fact hasn't done anything in skimming for years...

    This is an interesting thread.

I think the answer to the general premier is that skimboarders will too often buy surf company products anyway. Quiksilver already has their surf team and many skimmers think its a legit company already.... Is sponsoring a skimmer going to lead to a bunch more sales?

Only if skimmers get more choosy about supporting the companies that sport their sport.

Right now the major companies that seem to be supporting a top rider are billabong with Sam, Hurley with Blair, vans with Tim, maybe etnies and rvca with Paulo. Maybe some others I am forgetting.

I may be missing some but notice that quiksilver and volcom are pretty much absent in terms of rider sponsorship at the moment...

quiksilver gives away some goodies at oktoberfest but that's about it that I know. Geo used to get some volcom clothes years ago I think.

Pretty much I make a point to support the companies that take a real interest in skimming. I think those are pretty much the ones I listed above at this point...

On this same note, the big clothing companies are starting to downsize sponsorship of actual surf events. Nike is disbanding it's surf team and putting them all on Hurley (which is owns) and is going to stop sponsoring contests. Quiksilver, Ripcurl, and Billabong are all having troubles and are talking about pulling back on surfing sponsorships as well. Even the big ASP tour events just don't bring enough money in. That's why they try to put them in highly populated areas like NYC, but the waves are usually crap. It's a tough situation that I don't see changing until wave pools are common and have world class waves.

hurley sponsors blair. now i primarily purchase merch from hurley.
i think surf companies are doing a fine job at reaching out to the capitalist whores in the skim community.
it's not the board, it's the rider

Yeah I heard about nike transferring the riders too. I think companies like hurley are getting to be a brand for everyone like for example, hollister, more and more.

There are hurley shirts, shorts, and hats for sale at barnes and noble in my college that have the theme of the Charlotte 49er football team. I'm guessing just like any large company, Hurley has to diversify its market, even if that means putting money into a college football team and focusing less on surfing.
