how well do these keep your speed going out to a wave? i've tried both and i cant tell a difference

If it glassy you side slip, if its choppy you pump, if its in between side slip then pump.
Couldn't say it any better ^^^
When side slipping if you run fast enough and have near perfect balance you will see a huge difference, probably more than pumping, but it needs to be well practised, well balanced, and you need to be a fast runner. If you practice it allot you will get the hang of it and it will eventually pay off.
I like to side-slip going out and if needed pump coming in. Unless it's choppy like chev said above.^

(speed = float)
side slipping is used when you have a shit load of speed
pumping is used when you are drastically running out of speed
you have to use both at different times for different occasions, keep skimming and you'll figure out how useful both of these techniques can be.
it's not the board, it's the rider
i love side slipping. when i do it my back foot usually just above my tail pad and I'm centered over the board. you really want to keep your weight as even as possible to avoid drag and such. just keep doing it and u will get better. hope this helps!
if you're cool with me I'm cool with you. if u don't like me...idc, I'm just gonna keep skimming
I do agree with mostly everything said but I'd have to say that pumping isn't just for chop. You will understand this as you progress, while side slipping and pumping are more geared for their specified conditions pumping can be used just good as side slipping on a glassy day. you can approach a wave in a different motion (s-turn for instance) than you can in a side slip.
With all this said, I would say side slipping is easier and can be faster when the wave is somewhat further out and you have the exact angle you want on the wave. Pumping can be used to make a bit of a jump right/left or even s-turn to position yourself better for the wave.
Any tips on pumping? I cant seem to get the hang of it
back foot on kicker, stomp hard with front foot, lean forward, practice with lots of speed
it's not the board, it's the rider
what lucas said above. and when in pump i try to jump forward, sounds weird but it helps

i really want sam stinnett to come on here and give us some tips on pumping, he's got it down to a science and does it differently than most people.
it's not the board, it's the rider
he gets any wave he wants because he doesn't suck
I would aspire to be me if I wasn't already
I think mo just's pumping is more fluent than sams
have you seen that shit in person?
it's not the board, it's the rider
If you ever get the chance to see Sam skim in person, then you will realize that he is a white version of Usain Bolt....the guy frickin' flies!!!!!

If you want to get good at skimboarding don't listen to chev....that will increase your chances of mastering sideslipping/pumping by at least 90 percent
toe-gaff
sam is definitely the fastest, mo is really good at it also tho.

I have heard that Mo is exceptional at pumping. I forget who was talking about or if I read it, but it was along the lines of since he's not the fastest guy around he let his pumping carry him and help him maintain or evan gain speed.
what about B.rothe pumping????
I LOVE SKIM!!
Practice skateboarding without kicking. Only tack back and forth to gain speed. That will help teach you the fundamentals of the technique.
