"All that is gold does not glitter, not all those who wander are lost; the old that is strong does not wither, deep roots are not reached by the frost. "Don't you know my name yet? That's the only answer. Tell me, who are you alone, yourself and nameless? But you are young and I am old. Eldest, that's what I am. Mark my words, my friends: Tom was here before the river and the trees; Tom remembers the first raindrop and the first acorn. He made paths before the Big People, and saw the Little People arriving. He was here before the Kings and the graves and the Barrow-wights. When the Elves passed westward, Tom was here already, before the seas were bent. He knew the dark under the stars when it was fearless—before the Dark Lord came from Outside." - Tom Bombadil
Not as profound as Gandalf but for some reason Tom was my favorite character. Didn't like most of the songs but his were great

"never look down on someone unless you are helping them up." i have no idea who said it.
I mean he isn't important to the story really at all, I can see why you don't like him I just had such a clear image of that character/scene in my head, I don't know I just liked it alot can't explain why.
Not much is explained about Tom, and it's the mystery behind him that makes everybody interested in him, kinda like Treebeard. At least that's how I see it

I don't dislike him because he isn't important to LotR, I dislike him because of all the annoying pontificating by Tolkien fans about the meaning of his character. I don't mind it for other characters (in fact I welcome it) but for some reason I just see him as kind of silly. Tolkien created him in honor of a doll his kids had, that he told him stories about, and I don't believe much thought was really given to who his character was in the big picture of the history of middle earth. As Tolkien expanded his mythology, I don't believe he felt Tom was worth elaborating on, and his being quoted as saying that some things in mythology should remain a mystery, even to the author, personally sounds to me like a dismissal of the idea that Tom is even worth explaining. Or he could be a valar, or even the personification of Iluvatar himself, but for some reason I don't care.
I think it's his gay ass singing.
