Be light on your feet, and instead of trying to ride through the bumps, pump over them as smooth as possible. Watch skim movies as well...

I have the same problem. I have been able to get out farther a lot more just with getting on the bored at the correct time. The gulf is a pain in the ass most of the time. I usually get over the small waves in the way by pumping very smoothly over the wave. I try to side slip as far as I can until i hit the small waves and then quickly turn the bored pump it and ride out to the wave. Since the gulf is always horrible, everything needs to be close to perfect to get a good ride. Just perfecting the drop and at the correct time, side slipping or pumping over the small waves, and keeping your balance for most speed is probably the most impotrant and difficult tasks.
    Hope I helped.
