Kite boarding

Whats everyones opinion on kiteboarding...i think its gay, if cant skim or surf you kite board

I think its sick..If it were consistently windy and I had sufficient funds and training I would definitely try it out..unfortunately I don't have any of those things except for a couple windy days every once in a while

You've obviously never seen anyone with a kiteboard charge up the face of a wave and see the air they get out the back. Pretty impressive stuff. Very popular over here, though I've never tried it myself.

It's a good activity for when it's too flat to skim, if there's some wind out there. It's physically demanding and looks like some good fun.

I'm gonna be picking up on some kitesurfing this year... totally will be denying my roots that lie in Windsurfing... i will be trying to combine kiteboarding with skimming; as in using the kite for power and getting out, and depowering it once on the waves...

Um....what? Have you ever tried it? It's hard. Equally as hard (in a different manner) than skimming or surfing. I thought I was going to be awesome at it right off the bat because I've got an extensive background in sailing and wakeboarding. I was proven wrong really quickly. That shit is hard. Some of those guys go huge too. I'd love to really get into it, but I don't have the money.

It's definitely fun as shit. I took a 4 hour lesson and was sailing upwind by the end of it, although out of control and completely losing it at times. I'm a decent windsurfer (can sail in harness/footstraps, huck some air, hit planing jibes), but even that experience didn't fully prepare me. I suck at wakeboarding (done it all of one time) and that part was killing me. I don't know how many times I lost my edge and just went into "Oh shit!" mode. This was on 9m kite in San Francisco bay wind ranging from 15-25mph slightly higher gusts. I think it'd be significantly harder to learn in lighter wind on a bigger kite as everything happens slower, you lose precision. I did luck into one 'kinda' air at one point and it highlighted a key difference between windsurfing/kiting. I was going to turn around, kite at noon and a gust hit. I went up probably no more than 3-4 ft, but I just hung there, floating...it felt really weird, but cool. In windsurfing to get air you have to be hauling ass, find a steep wave face and huck it. You get a very slight boost if from the wind if you angle your board/sail right, but nothing like kiting.

Honestly, I think windsurfing/kitesurfing are more fun than skimming. Once you get it, it's fairly easy and you can be completely worn out in about 2 hours of solid time on water. Skimming is fun in its own right, but much more chill, you don't have to constantly be chop hopping, managing gusts and just holding it together if you're in ridiculous conditions.

To each his own but I think Dave Scott might have an opinion on this. Because he rips on both skimming & kiteboarding & riding his skimmer with a kite. Boca huh ??
