I did before I move up here in Oregon......home of flat beaches, with bad surf and skim......You guys in santa cruz don't know how good you have it. There are so many surf and skim spots there......I didn't know how good I had it when I lived there (which was most of my life).

Have you checked out the pier at Davenport? I never skimmed there, but I remember surfing there back in the 70's, it had good waves with a steep beach. Also Davenport landing road, just north of there too.

Skimmed all the spots you listed. But they haven't been as good as they where a few years ago.

As I remember, santa cruz is it in the spring. Large waves & off shore winds.
Edit: I forgot, that's when it's starting to get warm too.

Does anyone skim the jetty at Capitola anymore? Or maybe you guys don't know about this place.....because it only breaks in the summer when there's a lot of sand around the front of the jetty and when the tide is very low. This pic looks bad because I took it out of a skimboard mag from 1989, it was used to sell my kevlar/carbon foam boards. Didn't know I used made foam skims did you?

jetty has built up sand now skimmed it about a week ago. Not that great though.. That photo shows it breaking completely different then what I'm used to. Usually its a plane out, pick up the line, and ride, this photo seems like you can pick it up like sharks or rockies. Sick photo!

Back then you would start on the north side of the jetty. And run right in front of the jetty....... Running over rocks and holes, much like rockies.

Is the wedge on the north side of the Capitola pier still working at high tide? That place was one of the best places in the winter, when 26th & 38th were gone.

Use to watch miles grobman shoot the pier from the primary. Roush too. The skim in sc is not what it used to be but still fun.

OK....here you go. Top pic is Hoopers around 1982 and bottom pic is 26th around 1985. Both guys are on wood, we did know about foam and there was no one to tell us......you can't ride waves on a piece of wood. Because there was no skimonline or even a skim mag back then, you might say we were shut off from the outside world.

last weekend at the south end of 26th there was a 1-2 foot drop off that was making decent white wash reforms that were pretty fun.. but nothing great. sunny cove was decent a few weeks ago.. really steep, but now its completely flat. so yeah, hoopers is about it for the well known spots.

jim keep the pics coming.. those are sick.

That looks like Shawn at Hoopers, one of my first team riders. Did I take that pic? I don't remember because that was in the early 80's.

Jim thanks for posting all those pics!! Brings back so many good memories of SC skim, and Skimboarding Magazine. The beginnings of Velocity started at Hoopers many years ago when Gary, Cliff and I used to skim there in the spring!!! Many of those epic skim sessions are still burned in my brain...

Here's a old pic, I think this might have been the first skim contest at 26th. Check out the date on the line-up board.

On second thought......this one might be older. The other pic has a few foam skims in it.
