Lightbulb Question about Blu-ray, HDMI, etc

My parents recently bought a Blu-Ray player and asked me to hook it up. However, their HDMI port is already taken by their HD cable. What is the best way to hook up the bluray player for HD. Is getting a HDMI splitter the only way? Rep for help.

I'm assuming you mean that the HDMI port is currently being used by the cable box, or some other entity, correct? If so, the only other way would be to pick up a HDMI Splitter. My Sony is a few years old, so it only has 2 HDMI inputs. One of which has recently gone bad. I bought a splitter from Best Buy for $99.99. Later that same day, I found the same one on Amazon for $15.00. Lesson here, don't buy it at Best Buy (I returned the Best Buy one). I ended up buying one on Amazon for $25.00 that had better reviews. It comes with a separate remote, so when I want to switch between devices, I simply do so through the remote and there is no need to get up and switch it manually. As far as picture quality, its great. Can't even tell it is feeding through a splitter...

Thanks brah. Yeah it is being taken up by the cable box. What brand is your splitter?

They also make boxes that auto switch to any active HDMI port so you don't need the remote.

That blue ridge I listed does that as well, but its a pointless feature as most people have at least 2 devices they don't turn off...

I bought it a couple hours ago from that link. Hopefully my parents will know how to work it.

This might be a little bit of a pain but it will save you a bunch of money and you don't even have to leave the house. Cut the end off of one of the hdmi cables (we'll call it Cable A) and peel the outer sheath back about 4 inches or so. Then carefully slice open about a 5 inch slit in the other cable (Cable B), near the end that goes into your TV. What you want to do is carefully pull the inner wires out of Cable B and expose them without actually cutting them. Then on Cable A you'll need to expose the wires and splice them together with their respective wires on Cable B. Make sure you match them up correctly.

Now use electrical tape to tape the whole thing up tight, and you now have an HDMI Y-cable. Since the signals will be mixed, you have to make sure whichever device you're using, the other one's off. You might think if you turn them both on you'll get a mix of the two signals but it doesn't work that way, if you have them both sending a signal at the same time your TV just won't register an HDMI signal.

    Good luck.

what i mean is the TV must be pretty damn old and not up to par with todays technologies to not have multiple HDMI ports. You could appreciate a blu ray disk much more if you had a nicer TV

seriously give this a try... way easier than it sounds... much hard imo than learning how to skim. worst case scenario you spend $5 on a new cable online. best case scenario you are all done. you dont need to worry about signal degredation/loss with hdmi (its digital) so this wont affect the quality of the audio/video either.
