Talking Hey just starting, need some tips. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hey whats up everyone I'm just getting into skimming the waves, I've been skimming flatland almost every year in Massachusetts, but I live near Ocean City Maryland. I've been using a friends board, looks like a low end Victoria in a small size. Not to good for me considering I'm 160 pounds. Anyways, I thought the best board for me at this time would be a Vic Foamie, so I ordered one up the other day and I believe it is coming in this Wednesday or Thursday. I just need some help with technique, and I'll post a youtube vid of me on the thread. I'm the guy without the shirt, and the skinnier one. Less footage of me but should be enough to get a general idea. You guys all seem pretty chill and not too harsh like I've seen on other sites. I know im a noob, so please don't tell me I suck. I am absolutely obsessed with this sport, and any help to get me further into the waves will be greatly appreciated. The link is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLw3vYQsfOA
Haha well after watching the vid again this is kinda embarrasing...

-Stand further back so you can run forward and gain more speed, making it easier to float

-Try getting used to a one-step drop, which is what most people use. I'm sure you could search and there will be threads explaining how it's done, it'll help with a ton of things including speed, more time to turn to wrap waves, etc. etc.
This working out thing isn't working out.

When going out to the wave if there's white water in front of it, I unweight my front foot. Sometimes I even lift it up a inch or two, so the nose of the board pops up and over the white water. Because If you just plow into it, it will slow you down too much.

Thanks fellas. Im kinda pumped to get a board that can actually support my weight because as you can see i sunk pretty quick with those. The board should come in soon so ill put the pads on it and get out there as soon as I can. Thanks again and if anyone else has any other tips feel free to post away.

And I was also wondering if anyone knows if the 2011 Vic Foamies are still made with a plastic bottom? Just wondering.

Yeah they still have plastic but it's no biggie considering it's your first board. Also that avatar is eerily similar to a Me Gusta face.

Like the guys above said^, the most important thing in skimming is speed. Remember you're not floating out to the waves, you're planing (much like a flat rock skipping across the water). Also read my sig. below.

Sprinting with the board in my hands, then throwing and running on seems to get me the furthest.

And this may not seem to fun but doing some 40 yard sprints on a road or grass a couple times a week can really increase your speed and helps you ride farther.
