The history of the surf-leash.
Since we're talking about surf leashes, thought you might like to heard the history of it. Now as far as I know, it wasn't invented by Jack O'Neill like wikipedia says. When I worked at O'Neills surf shop back in the early 70's, a young guy came in the store with a new invention.......he called it the surf leash. (I don't think anyone found out his name.) The first leash didn't look anything like the leash of today. It was a 3" round suction cup (that stuck on the nose of your board). The cord was made of surgical tubing (like used on sling shots) and had a loop made in the cord to go around your wrist and not your ankle. The bad thing about that leash was that when you fell off, the cord could stretch out about 50' and when you came back up from a wipe-out, you would come up to a board coming at you at mach 6.......You would either had to dive back down or put your hands up to stop the board. (I heard that is how Jack got his eye poked out). "And now you know the rest of the story"!

I think it was just bad luck. And he probably didn't tell anyone he invented it, just that everyone thought he did......... maybe because he was the first to sell them.
EDIT.......here's what wikipedia said. It was at Steamer Lane that the modern surfing wetsuit and the leash were mainly developed by Jack O'Neill, who had his surf shop nearby for many years and lost his eye at Steamer Lane.

Bros, I need help. Family just got a shack in dewey beach delaware, my little brother's birthday is on Wednesday and I want to spring for a surfboard for him/us.... We are both 5-7, i'm 170 lb I would think he's 155-165. I've surfed more than he has, but he was able to stand up first couple tries and all, handle himself alright. My problem is I'm at school in Pennsylvania right now but live in Maryland, so I can't drive to check out the boards in person, so I'll have to send my older brother to check them out and I don't want to send him on a wild goose chase.
My price range tops off at about 150 so I don't expect anything spectacular. Any advice on what to look for will be greatly appreciated. I'm curious how surfboards hold up (i.e. would buying an old board be a bad idea, or is there a good chance it would still ride well as long as it isn't banged up).

6'1" 3 fins, Wave Riding Vehicle from 1980s $125 no leash

Eeeek dem some slim pickins. Every 80s board I've held is heavy as crap, and I dont trust glass/foam that old. The 5'6" would be too small. I think you should keep looking
Alright, i was half expecting to hear that, the search started half hour ago so not too discouraged.
Are these reasonable criteria that i should be looking for?:
- I do want a shortboard, 6' or above.
- Not super old, Since 2002 at earliest
- Not dinged/ small pressure dings are normal i would think
- Three fins + leash
- Around $150, up to 175
- stomp pad
Any online places for used boards other than craigslist?
Alright, I think i'm delaying this search until i'm actually down the beach, should be easier around there. I'll keep an eye out until then, thanks doug.
local forums would be a good start. delsurf.com has a small amount of regular posters. beyond that, I'd check out a shop, though im not sure of any "legit" (not tourist trap) shops in DE. but I'm not from DE so I wouldn't know.
I think your criteria are reasonable, but in that price range expect to find boards that have been previously damaged and are now repaired. that isn't necessarily a bad thing, just be wary of anything that was totally snapped in half and repaired. filled in dings/cracks are no big deal.
you'd probably have to do craigslist to get that price. does AO carry surfboards? I've never been there since i don't have a car at school. or a board and suit for that matter.
people on craigslist usually have cheap boards. my friend picked up a shortboard for like 150 or so. it was in really good shape too.
nah alley oop doesn't have surfs but im sure the guys there would point you in the right direction

I'm going to maui in a couple of weeks, and I'm bringing my webber mini fish because it's a pretty good all arounder, and my standard 6'2" is too worn out to trust for a week there. The webber is a 5'9" twin with center plugs, so I want to get a mini trailer fin before I go in case I get lucky and score a good swell
anyone have any experience with these?
