Looks like a fun board, $350 seems like a pretty good price.

idk what would be a better board to learn to surf well with, im leaning more towards a retrofish if i can find a nice one for a good price
a 5"6' would be a great buy if it was in good condition, but not for you and your interests. Good thing is that your height is average and your weight is easy to work with. This means you won't have to buy a board thats more specific to your body type. If you want to get serious, buy a board with the qualities i mentioned above, and alway surf with a friend who is better than you. Its great to be able to ask "what did i do wrong there?" and its always more fun to surf with others in general.

what advantages do traditional fishes have over retros, i have experience on waves due to skimming mainly lines in nj, so im not new to that aspect. what worries me is paddling/dropping into the wave.
5'6 is gonna be way too small for you to learn on. I'm about your size and weight and I'm riding a 5'10 and I've been surfing for a long time. If you gonna start look for something in the 6ish to 7ish range. 6'0 to 6'6 would be a good board to start on.
oh, btw need something smell enough to fit in my dorm/car without roof racks. kind of kills me
the rocker on the retro fish is typically much less extreme than a rocker on a traditional fish. Also, the retro fish has a wider bottom than traditional fishes. Both of these factors give a change in maneuverability. Its obvious that you have experience riding a wave, therefore there is no reason to limit yourself by buying a retro fish that doesn't allow room for better cutbacks and sharper turns.
Now with the rocker, yes the retro fish may have a slight speed advantage but in your case, you know how to generate speed with a skimboard, so a board with actual fins i'm sure will be a big upgrade. What im saying is the rocker on the traditional fish most likely won't be as flat, but thats okay.
Now with your worries about standing up/dropping in, Fishes in general also have a larger width, typically exceeding at least 19", this is much easier to manage when standing up.
Finally, I agree with YellowSnow, a traditional fish 6'0-6'6" would be a great board to buy. And will most likely fit in your car.

a 6 foot will fit in most cars (you'll have to fold the backseats though) easily and definitely in your dorm. Also, imo, dropping in on a wave is muuuch easier to learn than a one step drop. But, if you're really worried about dropping in, make sure you get a board that has a pretty decent rocker. fishes tend to have very little rocker, making them a little more tricky to drop in on, however you can probably learn pretty quick (start setting your rail earlier and don't drop directly down the face). I've noticed skimboarders pick up surfing very fast. my brother and I learned how to surf in about two days after skimming for several years. Learning how to surf was nothing compared to learning how to skim.
back seats dont fold down(or so i think)
traditional fishes i have found to have almost the same rocker as thrusters...
either way zeus, you know what to get now.

meh, not worth it really. gonna be at school in a few weeks, and wont have a car for 8 months
yea probs not best time to buy a asurfboard haha
watch the moving bodies as they react to the sound
im gonna keep the surfboard in my dorm, its a 5 minute walk to the beach
oh lulz stoopid me
watch the moving bodies as they react to the sound
get somthing super thick and wide and youll have no problem with length really. ive ridden a 5'6 that rides like a long board. all about volume, but if you have any wave skill at all you wont have a problem. and youll be able to progress nicely. if you get somthing 6 ft plus youll probably hate it in a few months if you get pretty decent.
damn infractions
since this is the surfing thread I'm gonna throw this in there. One of my proudest moments as a father, my daughter's first day surfing:
@:33 DAT GOING DOWN LINE
she may have a future in this
haha thats so awesome to see. must be a sick feeling. steezin on that second to last one.
damn infractions
idk she looks 17 but im gonna have to go with 6
so pitted. I wish my dad surfed/taught me how to surf when I young.
my brother and I literally learned how to surf as well as the dynamics of the line up from other angry surfers. It usually went something like this: "frack you kooks. fracking paddle around you dipshits."
I'm not so sure about that... My Dad taught me how to surf, but it was really us going out and him scaring me shitless by pointing his nose at me and turning at the last second as i was paddling out. Aka i typically got at least one face full of saltwater every time we went out. He didn't really teach me much but rather supervised and expected me to learn on my own.
8 years later it is the most fulfilling thing to spray my dad on a wave using a cutback. Zap, don't become like him!

sounds like your dads a dick. but at least you he showed you the etiquette through example. I still remember the first time I snaked a guy. It's just so intimidating being a young grom by yourself against all these adults who rip.
First a retro fish has less rocker because it's shorter than a regular board (that's why it's faster). Also more rocker makes the board harder to drop in (it pushes water). Even though the retro fish is shorter it's wider in the nose, middle and tail, which makes it easy to paddle. Because the outline of the shape (template)which is straighter in the tail it has a lot of holding power & thrust. And because it's shorter it can still turn fast. As you see I really love the retro fish, I guess because I have rode and made hundreds of surfboards. So I kind of know what works and what doesn't. BTW, that's why my skims have the retro shape. All I can say is, you really need to try a retro fish for yourself to see if you like it as much as I do.
