Default An evacuated Japanese family is moving in next door to me.

My next door neighbor is a researcher for UC Davis and she had planned to go to Japan soon for work and to visit friends. Well her friend's house and everything in it was destroyed by the tsunami so she has invited them to come here and live with her till things get sorted out.

She has asked my daughter to be a 'big buddy' to the couple's 4 year old girl who apparently totally freaked out. It should work out great cause we saved a ton of her old clothes, toys, etc since we thought we would have more kids. That means the 4 year old will have a fully stocked closet, toys, bike etc when she gets here. The father studied over here and I think the little girl knows at least some english which will be helpful.

I can't imagine losing everything like that, feels good to help at least on a small scale.

watch out for radioactivity...tons of people left hiroshima with radioactive poisoning, i dont know but seems like if you were close enough you could catch something from a nuclear powerplant

this would be a risk if said family is carrying radioactive material around and/or high enough residual radioactivity is clung onto their clothes. Regardless, radioactive poison does not seem to be contagious. I would assume any individuals leaving japan and entering another country are screened for any ailments that may be contagious. This appears to be a normal protocol when something of this magnitude happens.

edit: from my understanding none of the nuclear power plants had a meltdown (last I checked) and only radioactive steam was put out into the atmosphere to reduce the risk of total meltdown.

this is what i hate about the commercialization of the entire planet... that its people are ok with radioactive steam let off into the ecosystem and what are the chances that theyve only done it this one time

btw zeus you have no clue what i know

You need to realize that a total meltdown is proportionally more harmful to the environment and inhabitants than steam. Don't be too quick to jump to conclusions, young grasshopper.

    .
plus there's sniffers (those little boxes, you see them in NJ subways too) in the airport. If you walked into a US airport all radiated, someone would know.

Theres a big difference between someone dropping an atomic bomb in your back yard, and some radioactive steam being released into the air.... The amount of radiation in the steam is hardly enough to cause much of an effect on a human (according to japan but they could be lying) unless you were standing in the middle of the vent inhaling as deep as you could.

More on topic, Colon thats an awesome thing for you and your neighbor to do, just make sure they return the favor a few years from now so you can go chill in japan haha

This is true, but i doubt your neighbor will be able to osmosis radiation to you, and until japan finally tells us if they ever do, how much radiation this thing is spewing out, until then we cant know how severe the spread of radiation will be.

Aw...I find the link distasteful Sir Colon. It cites no scientific evidence. It is coming from some right-wing lawyer that wiki states to be a "stirer of pots" sort of gal.

What I've learned is that radiation can cause DNA damage, which can often lead to cancer. This is because the DNA damage may be associated with genes regulating cell division. If these genes are damaged, there is no longer strict control over cell division and can lead to tumor growth (often times, a clump of cells that keep growing endlessly).

saw today that the water levels in the plants that prevent meltdowns and the release of radiation are off and are trying to be fixed to prevent further release of radiation and a possible meltdown (the water acts as a cooler if anybody doesnt know)...the only thing is that the number of people working in the actual plant now to fix it is limited because of the dangers of the radiation from the water levels...funny how things work out

they also have to wear airtight suits to try to protect themselves from the radiation (even though if anyone remembers from science class that there are radioactive materials in space giving off their enegy through a vacuum so i dont know how much a suit helps but im no scientist) hopefully they work
    Sincerely,
    Carl

Ohhhh so the part where you warned someone about the inherent threat of a human being absorbing then emitting Gamma radiation to someone else was common knowledge, damn I must've missed that memo.
