the s2 is awesome. I mean it's my first controller but I'm pretty confident you can do everything possible with 2 decks on it. 2 two sample decks really make it into a 4 deck controller anyway. I'm at the point where I'd be pretty confident playing a club or show on my s2. Looks like it's $560 now, I got really lucky and got it for $300 on a crazy amazon sale.

The Traktor pro 2 is great software as well. The only other DJ software I've tried is virtualDJ, and it blows compared to Traktor. The coolest thing I've found so far is the grid on the tracks. For instance, say I want to mix a 70bpm reggae song into a 140bpm dubstep track. You can just multiply the reggae song's grid x2, to make its BPM 140 (without speeding up the song). Alternately, you could divide the dubstep song's grid by 2, making its BPM 70. Shit is so cash.

Yeah that's what I gathered, that's why its so easy to do. It would be nice to have it done automatically but it's only one small step to do it.

yeah I've been meaning to check that out. Man I've been listening to a lot of different stuff lately, but I keep going back to that Netsky Essential Mix set. I've heard the whole thing through a couple of times, but it's become my standby for the last couple of weeks or since whenever you posted it. I googled the best Essential Mixes over the years and favorited a bunch of them to check them out later, but even w/ a long list to check out I keep going back to Netsky. I did listen to the Oakenfold Goa set from '94 on my drive home yesterday, it was voted best ever Essential Mix in 2000 so I figured it was worth a shot, even though I was afraid it would sound dated. It didn't. I hit really bad traffic and was running late for our first dodgeball game, so I once I got past the traffic I was fracking booking it and that set was the perfect soundtrack. Check it.

Nice, thanks for the heads up on that one, it's downloadable so I'm gonna throw that on my ipod and check it out. I would feel the same way considering it's from '94 but I know that Oakenfold is considered a legend though I haven't really listened to much of his stuff.

you've prob listened to that netsky mix way more than I have at this point haha, it is really great though, and D&B usually isn't my favorite genre.

my favorite ultra set: http://www.live-sets.net/2012/03/25/...12-24-03-2012/ Mord Fustang. Lots of life effects and sampling.

Nice, I'll check that. Yeah I've noticed DnB doesn't seem to have the mass appeal I'd expect it to have. I've heard people say "it's just a little too fast" to get into, which I can kind of see. I like a lot of different electronic genres but nothing gets me off like some good DnB. Probably helps that my first intro to electronic music was Squarepusher. If you can get used to 200+ bpm, 170ish seems like a walk in the park.

Oh also, I should mention the Four Tet essential mix. I listened to it yesterday b/c I love Four Tet, but when I went googling it actually came up on some top 10 lists. Some really good shit in there. I've got the Hot Chip one going right now, surprisingly good.

Been meaning to check out that Four Tet one. Yeah actually I started listening to squarepusher the other day when you guys were talking about him, he is on another level.

I think D&B isn't as popular because it isn't as "danceable" as other genres. House/electro/dubstep get played most in clubs, so that's what makes them most popular I think.

real talk. What Squarepusher are you listening to? Depending on what album you grab, you could get totally different shit. Don't even bother with his last 2 albums, they're ok if you're already a fan but not a good intro. If you want some straight electronic shit, check out Do You Know Squarepusher or Go Plastic or something around the 2000-2001ish time frame. Hard Normal Daddy was '97 and I've actually seen it pop up on some essential dnb album lists, it's a bit more organic & jazz-infused than his uber electronic shit from 2000, but still very electronic and probably one of the best intro albums. Music is Rotted one note was the following year and is straight up a tribute to Miles Davis' fusion shit. It's insanely good if you like that style of music, being biased I don't know how others would receive it, I think pitchfork gave it like a 9.7 though. Then Ultravisitor from 2004 is really good, kind of a mix, the title track is an absolute masterpiece (not a hyperbole) and is one of my favorite songs of all time.

What I love about squarepusher is he's a world-class bassist but he's also got a mind like a machine, and he jumps between the two extremes constantly in his music. He puts out some great shit and shit people probably see as over-indulgent and unlistenable. I like this interview vid because it shows how he works, he's a total recluse (or at least used to be) who wanted to do everything himself and not even be influenced by other musicians (he's talked about that in recent interviews).

Can you tell he's one of my top 10 favorite musicians of all time? haha

    (fast forward the first minute)

Honestly I just put his name in Youtube and started listening to stuff. Now that I have some guidlines I know what to check out, thanks. The Miles Davis fusion tribute stuff sounds sick I'm def going to listen to that album.

Yeah and the more I think about it, Hard Normal Daddy is probably the best general intro. And I was wrong, Pitchfork actually gave it a 9.8 but they've since removed the review from their site, no idea why.

    hahaha that's great.

I made a small believer out of one of my good friends today (well maybe just less of a hater). This guy HATES electronic music, his only real exposure so far has been to brostep, and in his words he "hates transformer noises and drops." He was annoyed hanging out with people listening to brostep songs and everyone is just waiting for the drop. I have a lot of respect for his taste in music (he's a hip hop connoisseur, has great taste in hip hop) and he's a really smart dude so I knew it would be worth the time. I explained to him about "brostep" and how much great downtempo stuff there is out there.

I showed him some Pretty Lights, SBTRKT, Kaskade, and some old school proghouse Deadmau5. He admitted to liking it. He especially like SBTRKT- "Wildfire"

I am going to continue to change his views. Mild success.

Also, I went to youtube to listen to Ultravisitor. Saw this on the sidebar and listened. I love this:

Nice, I'm actually not real familiar with that album, I've probably heard that song once, years ago, so it may as well have been brand new to me.

And yeah, I was trying to pimp out "Wildfire" after it came up on my Slacker last month, I'm not sure if I posted it here or not but I definitely tried to get a few friends to listen, to mixed success. There's some good shit on that album but about half of it is not my thing. At all.

To throw down another SP track, here's a track I would probably consider the one of the most universally appealing/accessible songs of his, I could be way off on that though...

Damn, is it? I went to download it but it's not compatible with my iPod Touch. I'm gonna buy the other one though because I've had $15 sitting in my iTunes account from a gift card I got over a year ago. I never spend money on there so might as well blow it on this.

What's the deal with Bassnectar? I know he has that remix of Ellie Goulding's "Lights" which I absolutely love, but I hear a lot of trash talked about his shit and the one song I youtubed the other day wasn't all that great, but it could've been a bad apple. He's one of the only electronic acts coming near here soon and I'm wondering if he's worth seeing.

this is my favorite Bassnectar song, after "Lights". It's amazing:

I've never really heard trash talked about him, what have you heard? He's not my favorite overall but based on how much I love the songs of his I do like, I would definitely see a show of his. I've heard that he has a ton of lights and it's really a great production.
