Traveling to the USA (westcoast)

I'm going to do some traveling this year, starting on the 18th of September in Los Angeles. I'll probably stay for 1,5 or 2 months. I was thinking about spending some time just south of LA, and after the oktoberfest traveling further up north.

I was hoping that some people from that region could give me some suggestions about what to do and what not to do, where to skim, when certain spots work, what other things I should really visit, etc. Also places to stay are welcome!
