one of my favorite actors of all time. He delivered one of the greatest monologues in movie history in True Romance.

It seems like they die in 3's. So we have Art Linkletter, Gary Coleman and now Dennis Hopper. I hope that's it for awhile.

If you know anything about his personal life, it's a miracle (literally) that he made it to that age.

"With all the drugs, psychedelics and narcotics I did, I was [really] an alcoholic," he admitted. "Honestly, I only used to do cocaine so I could sober up and drink more."

"My last five years of drinking was a nightmare. I was drinking a half-gallon of rum with a fifth of rum on the side, in case I ran out, 28 beers a day, and three grams of cocaine just to keep me moving around. And I thought I was doing fine because I wasn't crawling around drunk on the floor.... For me, alcohol was such a destroyer. It was real Jekyll and Hyde stuff."

In the mid-'60s, Hopper was part of the global counter-cultural revolution and taking mind-expanding drugs was the norm.

"Back in those days, we were all like guinea pigs," Hopper remembered. "We were always waiting for the next new drug. It was like, 'Hey, gimme some of that!'"

I've heard many actors/musicians say that the life really isn't glamorous like everyone thinks. TONS of stress, very little time off, always on the road living out of a bus etc. They try something that makes all that disappear and it's downhill from there. That's the only reasoning I can think of. Addiction's a bitch

True, I think spending a large portion of your life "becoming" different people could take it's toll on the human psyche as well. The best actors, the ones who can harness "true" emotions on demand seem to tend to become increasingly "eccentric" as time goes.
