i would have voted new with the old site because it was a hassle scrolling to the bottom of the page to click on the forum link.

    not anymore.

new tab vs new window is part of each users browser preferences. there is no html difference in the code.

i think a new window because it seems like a better advertising scheme, because people who visit the site for the first time will be able to look at both the forum and the site. whereas if it didn't open a new window, they would probably forget about the site.

I am not sure how two windows changes anything in terms of people "forgetting" about the site. Care to explain further?

Most people discover the forums through the main site. Many access it that way everytime...

I think that if i had never heard of these message boards before and just was taking a first look at the Skimonline homepage i would be less likely to continue further into a site if i kept clicking things that brought up new tabs. Sometimes i have a habit of clicking off of new tabs or pages before they even load thinking they are pop up adds, or another website all together. I found SOMB just by clicking around randomly on the Skimonline website when i was really looking for some factual research for a project i was doing about Skimboarding. (So glad i know of SOMB by the way). So in general people might be more likely to view SOMB as a larger and more connected piece of Skimonline if it did not open a new tab or window when they click on forums.

In addition i like to keep the number of tabs i have as small as possible when using chrome, just to stay organized.

at first i thought a new window would be good, but then after stopping to think i realized that if i wanted to go back to the main page i can just do a ctrl+click on the logo in the top right for a new tab back to the home page (plus keep where i was on the forum!!woo)
