If skimboards had as much float as surf boards

I think this would be the same. Back in the 70's, surfboards went to 4&5" thick....I made one for a friend, it was a copy of the G&S Waterskate. Because they were so thick, they had to have a very hard bottom rail. They paddled and caught waves good but rode like shit. Even with the super hard rail, it was hard to hold an edge on a wave. People called them too corky, and I think a skimboard would be too corky as well. Because a skimboard doesn't have fins, I think it would slide-out too. It seems to me, the thinner the surfboard / skimboard the better it rides. When I was a salesman in surf shops, I would tell people thick boards paddle better while thin boards ride better. Most people would agree with me.

You would be able to get way out to waves but would never be able to turn the board, or it would slip out form under you(no fins).

i think it would be amazing if they had great float, but same size/shape/thickness. you could go soooo much farther out and you could go really fast on waves. also you would just get used to not being able to turn as well

Well there used to a company called Madden Aqua planks that were built that way in the panhandle. Eastwinds still can build them for you. That is what I learned on and they were built that way.

I think that's the company that put a bunch of grooves in the tail (works like little fins). I guess they needed them to keep the board from sliding out.

Along these lines. What if surf-boards didn't have fins? Surfing finless is becoming a "thing" now. Watch the video I attached. You can draw a lot of parallels between skimming and the way this guy is surfing. He doesn't do a bunch of choppy top and bottom turns, he rides from the center, with all of his turns coming from the rails (like a skim board).

This riding is really impressive. The style is unreal, using the power of the wave, trimming and spinning. Not to mention the amount of speed you can gain without the fin to slow you down.

I never heard anyone say that Corky Ryan can only skim lines! I know a lot of you don't like him, but I think he's .

I made plenty of thick skims back in the day. I rode an 1 1/4" board for many years. I would taper the nose starting from almost the center of the board. The nose and tail would end up being like normal boards. Basically they were only 1/14" in the space between your feet. They rode great. The thing I liked about them was that you could launch airs! All that float wants to rise which adds "pop".
Another way I used to shape thick boards was to concave the areas where your feet go and thin down the tail. You would then have more float than the way I mentioned above but a thin tail for digging in. Plus, it didn't make you feel like you were riding high over the water.
When Clark Foam stopped making skim foam I stopped making the 1 1/4" boards because surf blanks were the only other way to get that thickness and surf blanks just don't hold up well for skimming.

maui skimboards are great examples of why it wouldnt work if skim's were thicker so they had more float...maui's are super floaty however have very soft rails and have channels in the tail to act as fins. I really dont consider them skimboards but like surf skim hybrids. Tech ( my favorite thing to do ) is super hard and sketchy on them. However on a wave they ride pretty damn well.

well texas is part of the gulf coast. Theres seems to be some decent waves braking but there like 10 feet to far to get to maybe something like this could help.

Only 10 feet too far......maybe try side-slipping out, and run your ass off too. Or try riding the white water (white wash as you guys call it). That's what I have to do up here in Oregon.....the damn waves break about 500' too far out.=(

It's easier when the tide is higher and also when it's coming in. And when the tide is going out even the waves are weaker.

Well, think about it.......the moon is pulling the water out which is pulling against the waves coming in. And then......about 6 hours later the moon is pushing the water & waves in, which = bigger and faster waves.
