so i've got a good bit of money saved up and i've finally decided to go to school in-state and now i've freed up most of that cash i was saving for college. i've decided i want a small sailboat but i have no idea what they cost or what's involved with sailing and i was hoping someone here could enlighten me.

Well what would you like to know? I would suggest taking a course on sailing if you don't know what's involved with it.

i'm thinking 12-14 feet for now, maybe a bigger one one day. do they make sailboats that small?

yes. so you're looking for a personal craft. you will have to take a rather lengthy sailing course depending on where you live and what you intend to do with your boat. as for pricing, it all depends on what make you buy.

i used to a little bit. i got out of it after katrina though because my boat mysteriously disappeared and i didn't buy a new one.

Sailings pretty big here, my Dad went to the Olympics when he was younger to race sailboats. Kids here usually take sailing summer classes and stuff, and my brother used to do it. I have a little cousin that is pretty sick at sailing, he's been owning kids in the Nationals, and did pretty good in the states sailing too.

i had a vanguard 15. it's on that website. i bought it for about 5600$. it was fast and fun. depending on your price range, i'd reccomend it. it's definitely not a beginner boat, but once you get your bearings, it would suit you. you could do that, or buy a boat like the sunfish which islandboy talked about above.

i used to race 420's those are some badass boats. but for you i would recommend a lazer or a sunfish. lazers are fast as frack. they used to beat us even though they are small(er)

its really not that hard to learn to sail a sunfish or other small boats but classes definitly would help depending on where you're going to sail.

Tourists always either rent those or sunfish's here, that might be a good idea for you too. I'm not sure around you where you would be able to rent them, but it would be good just to see if you really want to do it or not, and how much fun it really is for real...

Hobie cats fly. I watched one with four people on it haul ass past the dock I was on. The wind was maybe 5 - 10 knots, and it seemed like they were doing 10 - 15.

sunfishes are probably the easiest to sail and plus it has a center-board so you can launch it off any beach

catamarans are fun and fast, but they are a bitch if they capsize

racing boats are also fast, but unless you plan to race they are not worth the money because they are usually expensive (being made with top of the line materials) and have a lot of extra shit onbaord for different sail configurations and stuff

cats are very difficult to deal with if they capsize, this is true. you can get a vanguard 15 for around 5k$, and if you can sail, you can hang with a lot of faster boats. you don't have to carry a lot of stuff either, i raced one for more than a year.
