I really can't wait to take it out, Hopefully it warms up but of course temps this week are going to be in the high 20's so, Good thing I owe some money on the board and won't have it for alittle while.

In Oregon, I'll go out in the 40's but not any lower...... and the 20's is just nuts.

    sorry didn't check back. I am 6' 190lbs.

My uncle shapes all my boards. I always "under gun". I hate big boards with a passion. The biggest board I ride anymore is about 6'3. However, with the shorter length, I obviously compensate with a little width and thickness. Not too much thickness, but it isn't a piece of paper either. 20" is about normal width for me. I think I have one board that dips into the 19s, but its more of a traditional shortboard.

I have to say, my concerns of how much easier this board will be to ride compared to my shortboard are still bothering me a bit, I'd hate to have it be just as difficult as my short because it just sucks the fun out of it completely, sitting with 6 inches of the nose out of the water and trying not to roll while trying to catch waves just isn't fun.

LOL....I thought you didn't want to tell me how big you were. So for you guys that think a 5'10" board won't float you.......he's 190lbs and he likes his 5'10". But he's not a beginner so if you are and you weigh as much as him you would want to go longer and maybe a little wider too.

Your board is a lot bigger than Magadeth's board and when you're sitting on it, yes there will not be a lot of board sticking out of the water because it's a blunt nose fish. But when you start to paddle, catch waves and ride them you'll see the difference a fish makes.

Edit.....how big did you say your old short board was?

At first I though your new fish you wanted would be a boat! Then I remembered you said your short board was too small. So yes your new fish surfboard will be a lot better.......you're going to love it.

Fins.......what order were they invented? Well we all know the single fin came first, but what came next? This is the way I remember it in this order. (Single fin) ( I think twin fins fish came next, it was so long ago it's hard to remember)(three fins, first large single fin in back and two very small fins up front) (Then all three fins the same size, med) (Later, two med size fins up front and a small one in back) (Then four med size fins. later two smaller ones in back) (Today with boards having 5 fin boxes, I'm sure someone has tried 5 fins) I may have mess this up, but is the best I remember it.

Here's my take on skimmers taking up surfing. Skimming already know how to judge waves (know when they are going to break) which is the hardest part of learning to surf. Next, they already know how to turn a board. OK, here's the bad part....skimming mainly builds the legs and doesn't really do anything for the arms. Which is what you use 90% of the time, like paddling out and catching waves, standing and turning is just a small part of surfing. You'll find out that padding is what you'll be doing most. If I take only a few months off, my arms get weak and after a short time makes it hard to catch waves. I don't know of any exercise other than surfing to build up those muscles, so if you feel you board is too small, it might be your weak muscles.
Edit.....I just check and the guy in the video Lil Rascal didn't ride any wave over a minute, which is a very long ride. So like I said you really don't us your legs as much as you think.

Can I just add on that wetsuits make it that much harder to paddle? Last session I went out my arms were burning so badly on the paddle because I hadn't gotten a good surf in a month at least. My wetsuit resisting me wasn't helping. I even have a super stretchy billabong suit with the rubber seams and everything, the problem is it's a M and I need a MT or maybe a LT. Every session I feel like I get to a point though where my arms don't really hurt anymore, it's just the first 15-30 mins for me that can be really bad.

im a competitive swimmer all year round so that helps to keep the arms in shape. i pride myself in my paddling ability, although my duckdives could be a tad deeper when the waves are bigger.

Here's a size chart I just found, how does this sound to you guys that ride fish already? 5-6 means 5'6" and so on.
This chart is only used as a guide, you may want a larger or small size board.

Fish Model Size Chart YOUR WEIGHT- SIZE- NOSE- WIDTH- TAIL & THICKNESS
    155-160 5-6 , 17- 21 5/8- 16 3/4- 2 1/2
    165-170 5-8, 17- 21 7/16- 16 3/4- 2 9/16
    170-175 5-10, 17- 21 1/2- 16 3/4 -2 5/8
    175-180 6-0, 17- 21 5/8- 16 3/4- 2 3/4
    180-185 6-2, 17- 21 3/4- 16 3/4- 2 7/8
    185-190 6-4, 17 -21 7/8- 16 3/4- 3
    190-and up 6-6, 17- 22 -16 3/4- 3 1/8

Sorry I though you were over 200lbs like me. Like I said it's only a guide.
How tall are you? And do you surf all the time?

Your 5'10" and you know how to surf already, so I would say you could ride a 5'6" or even up to 5'10". Remember you're still growing.

Back when I made fish surfboards,(70's) I weighed 180lbs and was 6' tall. So that weight chart I found is very close... I think.
Tbaby, post a pix when you get it, all of us on here would like to see it.

Edit....I think also a good rule of thumb is start with a fish the same size as you are. Back then I was 6' and I rode a 6'.....but that's just what I like. You might want something bigger or smaller.

OK.......guys my goal here is not to make you a surfer and stop skimboarding. I just notice that a lot of you guys already surf or would like to start. So this thread is to help you get a board that you can jump on and shred. Also if you do start surfing I would hope that you do like I do......I skateboard, surf and skimboard. Don't just do one board sport, do them all, I do and I like them all equal.

Here I fixed it. That tail looks like it would hurt. The board doesn't have any drive, it only does 360's.=(
