As a rule.....the shorter the board is the less rocker you need. Which means shorter & flatter = more speed & faster turning.

    mr. gordon -
Ive been working on finding one like i said and it looks like iv'e come across a sweet deal.

    im 145 lbs, 5'7" maybe 5'8"
    Found a fish 5'4" x 19.5 X 2.10
I'm thinking it's right about where i want it for an agressive style fish. What you think? I serioulsy want a 5'0" one but beggers can;t be choosers.

5'0 sounds kind of short, that's 7" shorter than you.......hope you surf as good as a pro. The 5'4" sounds a lot better, but the 19.5 sounds a little narrow though. But if you can get a real good deal you could surf it for a year and sell for what you paid for it and buy a new one. What is the shortest board you have rode and what was the shape.

Back in the late 70's early 80's your board would be called a rocket fish, because it's longer and narrower than a retro fish. The only difference was they only had two fins not three. And the two side fins would be back more too.

So why is there two surfboard threads? OK here's what happen. I made a thread on fish surfboards. As a joke, I called it A FISH STORY. When Nick saw it he thought is was a fishing story, which I knew a lot of people would think. So Nick made a surf thread and found out there was already one. Here's what we came up with, if you have a fish post it on( A FISH STORY) and if you have a reg surfboard post it on (Surf Thread). If your not sure if you have a fish or not, go read my threat.

I thought you were heavy, can you tell us how much you weigh? That would help this thread a lot in determining what size board would float someone.

I think this thread is about dead, so I better tell you guys as much as I can why fish surfboards are the best for skimmers that wants to start surfing. Lets talk about the shape of the fish tail, with the V cut in the tail, what's up with that? Here's what I found out when I rode and made them in the 70's. When you think about it's like having two pin tails for greater hold and better water release (more speed). When doing hard turns the fish tail makes you feel like the board is on tracks (super hold). Other tails makes your board feel like your sliding all over (compared to the fish). Also for me I like how when you're in the tube and you start to out run it, you can push on the tail and you can make it dig in and slow you down (like a back brake) which = more tube time. Let me think of more and I'll get back to you guys.

the fish tail makes the rail longer on each side, giving you more hold through turns. right?

Yes....you get it, and it doesn't curve away from the water (wave) like a narrower tail. But at the same time it makes the board a little stiffer(harder turning), but the board being short off sets that stiffness. It also gives the board more drive though the turns. And because of the straighter rails it gives you more control on larger waves (most short boards don't like larger waves).
See how my round pin curves in, which works great on mushy waves. But has less hold than a wider straighter rail. Again, straighter rails as a rule are stiffer, that's why fish are shorter than a reg board. That's the way I see it anyway. BTW, my face is blocked out to conceal my identity.

Only wood skimboards now. But now that I made this thread.....my son wants to make one. He thinks it looks easy to make a surfboard. Boy will he be in for a surprise when he starts, it took me many years before my boards were good enough to sell in shops.
Concealing my identity started out as a joke, now I find it fun to be unknown.

nfarino117: Do you just use a paint pen on top of the front of your board? Or do you have to take it apart?

So what's up with the wide nose on a retro fish? Well if you have a short board and you have a narrow nose, you'll need to paddle it farther back.....which means it will be harder to paddle and catch waves.

board.....I bet 99% of you guys don't know who Mike Doyle is, he was the world champion surfer back in the early 70's or late 60's........... It was so long ago I can remember.=( Anyway that's going to be a real fun board, I can tell just by looking at it. Reason being, I made a board just like that in the 70's / 60s' but my board was a twin fin.
Try this.....on small days just use 2 fins, first just try 2 in front, then try just 2 in the back. And for good days use all 4 FTW.

Yeah I saw some vids of him surfing way back when on youtube, It's nice and wide, and alittle long so it'll have some leeway for stupid beginner mistakes.

This may seem stupid question but won't removing the front 2 cause alot of extra drag?

Fish boards because of that big V in the back you have to get a rail saver on the end of your leash. If you don't the leash will get caught in that V and make a big cut in the back of your board. And it will look like someone took a saw to your board.=(

No.....maybe even less. But use what works best for the conditions. But it's not that much drag anyway because the fins cut though the water like a hot knife though butter.

I see, but a twin fin is even looser in the back then a quad correct? and isn't a rail saver just a piece of fiber that makes sure the leash starts past where it'll get caught in the tail?

Sometimes they are a clear hose over the back end of the leash and some are like a piece of seat-belt tied to the end. Back in the days our twin fins were back farther and were called keel fins, because they looked like a keel on a sail boat. They were low and wide and move to about 6" from the tail. Now four fins work because they are moved up a lot more. The farther you move your fins up the looser the board.
