I live in florida right now, but there's a chance of moving to cali so if I do I'll keep that in mind. I can definately get some normal keels for this thing, I bet they would even be better for a long clean point style wave. Thanks for the input I'll update when I get to take it out again.
so jim gordon. i got so inspired by the video of crappy waves and fun surfing that i am actually getting a fish this weekdn. its the first time im surfing again since i was like 19. THANKS DUDE! im getting a replica of the biscuit from a friend. im fracking stoked!

soooo, would this be a good first board for me?
never been surfing before in my life btw.

Seriously JG. Good work on the odd board awareness campaign lol. The "shorter is better" with less rocker trend is def becoming popular. Shane Dorian has been riding a 5'2" quad that he fracking rips on, even in decent sized waves...pretty cool shit

Yes and no.....but you skim, so you will learn quick. If you have not even skimmed I would say get a long board just to learn to catch and stand up on waves. But as soon as you learn that part, then switch to a fish. Here's something skimmers need to build up for surfing, paddling muscles. Skimmers have very strong legs but now you need to work on your arms and chest muscles. That's one of the reasons I wanted to surf was to build up my upper body.
Now guys don't stop skimming, I didn't stop and I do both. They are both fun....but when one is not good you can go do the other. During the summer I skim more because there are too many F%cking people out, and you'll find yourself setting on your board more than riding.=( Unless you're as good as the guy on the Lil Rasical.

Yeah, most of those boards are designed to turn on a dime (and do) which makes them really "twitchy" and unstable. It's doable. It will just take a little while longer to learn.

Yeah they are twitchy, that's why you ride them different. For me I have to keep turning them (pumping them) across the waves. On big waves if try to do big carving turns they feel out of control....for me anyway. Like when dropping into a large wave I like to do a few quick turns on the way down to the bottom, maybe it's to check my speed. Not sure.....but it works for me or sometimes I turn in the middle of the wave before I hit the bottom. I hope you guys can under stand this, I'm having a hard time trying to get my message across. I guess I'm tired and falling asleeeeeep.......................................

i ride a lost 5'5" x 19 1/4 round nose fish like the movie and they are my fav <3
Yeah i think the peanut shape is the best option for the small-mid sized choppy waves. Im planning on making it 7' and I figure it should be no more than 18" wide at its widest point. Im still not sure how Ill shape the bottom but I was thinking a single slight concave down the middle, maybe a double concave at the nose
I have watched a lot of videos on alaia boards and it seems like the old style shape works best and I think they said the square tail worked better than a fish tail and no concaves either. I don't remember which video.....just google alaia .

no there is supposed to be a failrly deep single concave through like 3/4 of the board
"Haha.. you fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is: Never get involved in a land war in Asia, but only slightly less well-known is this: Never go against a Sicilian when death is on the line!"
I can't say those look very fun to ride. I've seen some of the pros trying them out and it looks pretty rough

I think it's just cool to own and to ride one. It's what the first surfers rode...... it's history.
Anymore fish pixs or stories out there?

This is kind of a cool funky board comparison. There's an Alaia in there too.

How long should a fish be? I'm like 6'0, 145lbs, noob at surfing. Been looking at getting this: http://www.catchsurf.com/surfboards/...&products_id=8
I couldn't care less
dude, stay away from soft tops. they are heavy and they suck
I know they're not top-performance boards, but they seem fun.

just bought a 6'6" kechele fish/swallow tail board... it's going to be awesome in mushy waves i can't wait to get this cst off my leg and for some swell!!! pics later hopefully
most A typical
I'm 6' too, and I like to ride a fish the same size as me......6'. I know it's kind of big but it works for me and I weigh a lot more than 145lbs too. Also, I like them wide around 21", remember width and thickness is just as important as length for float. If I was you I go rent a fish, start out with around a 6' and see if you like that size, and from there you can go up or down in size.

Hey Doug my bad for thinking those fins were big, I just watched a video on your board and here's what I found out. Keep those large flex fins on. Only if you have a lot of trouble with thick kelp stopping you. Because in the video they said that your fins give great holding power.....but because they flex they don't slow you down like a large stiff fin would. Smaller fins could pop out of the wave and make you slide out, but those large fins won't. After you ride it let us know how it works

Jones, i was thinking of getting a catch surf too.
Cheap, soft, and good for mushy waves? any one have a Catch surf theyd like to comment on
shitty. trust me dude, soft top boards are realllly heavy. I've never ridden that one, but they are so heavy it's like turning a boat.
I just love how in this video the guy flies past those long boards, and it looks like they are saying WTF!!!!
Don't get me wrong.....I love riding my long board too.

I'm actually picking up a McTavish Twin Fish 6'4 or a Webber 6'9 fish tommorow, all this talk of fish shapes have shown me the light of the shape haha thanks jim!
http://www.webbersurfboards.com/
Go to the afterburner, its a 6'9 of those, my current board is a 6'2 spyder shortboard, and unfortunately its way too hard of a first board to learn on, so I'm going with a larger fish to help me get the basics down then eventually switch to the 6'2.
OK, that's better. Though that board shape is still I think more of a bigger wave board or for a more advance surfer. Are you going for the 20"1/2 I hope, if not that board might still be hard to ride. How tall and how much do you weight, that would make a big difference.

I'm a small guy, I'm 5'7 and about 135, as stupid as this sounds the site says the board is good for 2-5 ft waves, I'm not 100% sure how wide it is but im about 75% sure that its the 6'9 x 20 1/2, but it's much wider then my spyder shortboard.
But I'm all ears open to any advice you have.
Edit: Although I'm sticking with a fish.
