    Default Best Video Editing?

So, I was watching a couple surf movies the other day, and then skim movies, and I started comparing the editing styles with my friend. So I wanted to ask you guys: What kind of action sports videos do you think have the best editing and why? What order would you rank them?
    How does this thing work?

I think that your question is strange.

Videos are not edited based on the sport... although different sports will require different kinds of shots... you can't say that surf videos are ALL better edited than skate videos.... that depends on the style of the editor... NOT the sport, so there is no way to rank them.
It also depends on the preference of the viewer.

I think you should rethink your question and poll.

Sorry, but I hated the editing in stimulus, other skim videos have been hit or miss. Skate videos its not so much the editing as it is the camra work that I don't like, fish eye lenses and floor up shots are annoying. Surf videos it all depends on the filmmaker. I chose fmx/motocross as they tend to use more wide angle shots and the cut in/out between shots seems less choppy. But it all depends on who is doing the editing. 3rd coast pretty much nailed it though, video editing has nothing to do with what sport the video is depecting.

The type of editing is based on the sport. You aren't going to see wide angle shots in skateboarding for the most part because the nature of teh sport. You will see them in fmx because the jumps are so massive and when they are jumping in like desert, shit looks breathtaking.

True, but then again that isn't the editing, its the directing. I guess the wide angle was a bad example to use. The acual footage isn't a result of editing. The editing is matching the footage to the music, the transistions between shots, music choice, ect. The sport dictates the directing/camara shots, not the editing.

Right, that's why I picked snowboarding. I don't snowboard, but I think the videos are so well put together.

    I don't think it's a strange question.

I know about editing being somewhat subjective based on the subject material, I've done video editing for multiple sports. Still, there are certain attribute that seem to carry over mroe or less no matter what the sport. the lifestyle shots, the action montage, the slowmos, the mirror ride clips, etc.

It's not just about shots - that's photography. I'm talking about the overal composition of a video. Compare apples to apples if you want: Compare a "surf porn" movie like Campaign 2 or Stranger than fiction with Bearded or Stimulus. In Bearded I think the timing and flow of each clip is much more in-sync with the music than say Campaign 2, and the music actually compliments the clips and the rider's style, giving you a small insight into the actual personality of them.

Maybe you wanted to do skating or wakeboarding. Some of those films have a more documentary feel to them. I haven't seen Wunderkind yet, but I'm interested to see how a movie that has much more lifestyle/documentry-esque footage of skimboarders compares to other documentary style action sports movies.

Skate. It has the biggest budget and they don't need to wait for swell, snow, or wind to do it. Unfortunately this also means that 10 thousand horrible editors can get their hands on good footage. Sometimes they get some huge names to edit or direct skate videos. Those videos are insane.

all of the snowboarding videos I've seen have been pretty sick. I just love skim videos so i guess i'm biased. I've seen a couple of surf videos too (who hasn't?) and I liked the transitions

my friend made a wakeboarding video and showed me a few and I was impressed.

I live in FL. I can't say I've ever watched a snowboard video other than short clips here or there. I've only seen snow IRL twice.

I've seen a LOT of great snowboard flicks. No idea why it seems that way. Maybe things they do just look cooler because the settings are usually so epic. From night shots in the snow, to heli shots on a huge mountain, etc.

Snowboarding. Something about the transitions and angles just make it interesting to watch.

Snowboarding editing is past every other sport in my opinion.

example: Isenseven, Mack Dawg Productions, etc.

Snowboard editing is great as others stated, but I am also very impressed with a lot of longboarding (skating) and mountain biking movies.

3rd coast is right, it's not the sport, its the talent of the video editor... My favorite editor is the UST editor, and my second is whoever edited Free4All the wakeboarding movie.

First, to comparing BMX to Surfing, in your poll, is NOT comparing apples to apples.

The part about lifestyle and the documentary feel, that is directing... not editing...

So far your debate seems to be based in personal taste over actual editing skill... which editing skill is hard to rate because the director has a huge involvement in how the editing is done.

i haven't read any of this, but i'd say first would be snowboarding thanks largely to isenseven hah.

secondly, wakeboarding for sure. go watch oakley's push process. or pre pop. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IggttTXIdwg

when done right, the filming in wake sports is way above par compared to other sports.

I say a tie between skateboarding and snowboarding.

All my top fav edits are of the both.

I think isenseven's skate teaser showed incredible amount of potential to pass his snow stuff.
