    Default Big people skim boarding?

Whats up everyone? i have been swept away by the trill of skim boarding. Im 5'8" about 240... so i am in desprate need of someone to help me get the right size board.... Ive have had some pretty cool lil dudes try to help me out but they are 13-17 and pretty bad ass if i must say. But when i try there boards its just not right. Its hard to explain. I love this b/c it keeps me off the couch and my 2 yr old loves the beach....I live in Savannah GA, so we dont have huge waves , but the exercise is great... So any and all advise would be greatly appreciated...............thanks SlimRhino

although a lot of the entry level boards are usually geared towards kids, you could find a large sized mid-range board with a 3/4 foam core, which would give you extra float.

most boards will have a size chart according to wait. Use that as a refference.
The boards you have tried are probably too small for you. I would say go with a board in the biggest size cause those are easier to learn to ride on.(if you cant find a size chart)To go along with all that it is better to go with bigger rather than smaller.
    Hope that helps

but don't think you need to go THICK (1 inch) if you go long.... its to much board then......long/wide/thick.....NAH!!!

5/8's works the best at larger sizes and inchies work best for 50-53's and they do have more pop (on flat ground) but is more pop worth it when the boards sucks at everything else.....

LONG WIDE AND THIN = you.

but hey i smoke crack (like always) what do i know.

wouldn't it make more sense to get short wide and thick? 5'8 isn't terribly tall so i think it might be akward to hae a big board. i guess its more preference though cuz i am riding a 3/4 21 wide 51 and i'm not even 100 pounds.
btw get a board at skimcity or extremeoutdoorsupply and i wouldnt worry soo much about getting a huge board, i garentee you will lose weight if you skim enough. it happens with skimboarding especially but even surfing. my dad used to be like 210 before he surfed and after his first year surfing he was like 180.

Here's the way I see it.......for riding railing you want a smaller board so you can spin or flip it easy, because when you think about it as soon as you're on the rail you don't want a big heavy board. But on the other hand.....for waves I like the largest board I can ride, why? Because getting to the wave and staying in it is the hardest part of wave skimming.....getting the board to turn is not. If the board is big but light.....it will turn, you may need to just turn it a little harder. I also think go bigger not thicker, thinner boards just ride better. I found this out when I made surfboards, thick surfboards paddle good and don't ride waves as well.

Jim, I really couldn't disgree with you more.

"Because getting to the wave and staying in it is the hardest part of wave skimming.....getting the board to turn is not. If the board is big but light.....it will turn"

No, a board that's too big for you will not turn, nor will it hold the line and stay in the wave face. It will suck. It will slip out right from underneath of you. Yeah, you might be able to float to the wave easier, but what good will that do you if you can't ride the wave propertly because the board is too big.

And as for surf boards -- thick surfboards ride just fine. They catch waves so much easier, paddle easier, and are just fun to ride altogether. No, you won't be able to kill it like a pro-bro-bruh-ripper, but most people aren't looking to surf that way anyways ( or can't). The surfing community would be MUCH BETTER as a whole if they just rode thicker surfboards, and stopped reading surfer magazine! Thinner skims do ride better, but that's because they don't have fins. Put fins on it (i.e. a surfboard), that's a different story. It's like comparing apples to telephones...

I don't read any surf mags anymore, I got my info. from making hundreds of surfboards and thousands of wood and foam skimboards. I remember back when I was young, surfboards at one time went up to 4" thick. They didn't last long, because surfers said it felt to corky. So as you see boards can be to thick as well as to thin......each person needs to find the thickness that works best for them. I did make a extra thin surfboard one time, it was hard to paddle out and to catch waves and didn't work on mushy waves. But on fast good waves (once you did catch the wave) it worked great. Like I said.....find what thickness works best for you.

next board is gonna be 5/8 but my 3/4 is fine for me. its a little hard to turn in waves under like waist high and amost impossible under knee but it gets the job done. i'm just thankful i dont live on the gulf then i would be totally screwed.
