    Default Speakers Won't Work

I recently reinstalled XP on my computer and everything is working fine except the sound. I figured it must be the drivers so i found the driver CD for my sound card and that didnt work either. I know theyre all plugged in and not muted. Head phones aren't working either. Any ideas?

you are missing the sound drivers. Go to your motherboards website and see if they have drivers there. The cd drives sometimes don't work after a certain period of time.

Just go to your computers manufacturer support page (HP, Dell, whatever it is) and put in your model number. There should be a page with all the downloads you'll need such as sound drivers.

Sounds like your mobo's onboard audio might of shat itself...assuming the speakers do actually work. If that's the case you can pick up a PCI soundcard really cheap.

I put my driver CD in an oak barrel for 5 years, reinstalled, and it sounded better than it used to. Nothing like a little quality aging for improved SQ.

Make sure all your Chipset drivers are up to date. Generally onboard sound is managed by bus controllers which are in turned managed by things like the chipset drivers (the chipset is the set of "coordinating" IC's - they manage the CPU, RAM, Bus, onboard controllers for sound/video/network/IO, etc.). Common manufacturers are VIA, Intel, SiS.

What model Dell do you have and someone can probably point out the appropriate download.

Could be - my desktop upstairs was order sensitive - just reinstall the audio now. Generally the chipset is best to install first since it makes some of the integrated peripherals visible (and the subsequent driver installs work out better).

    Do it.
