It's kinda like me calling a Florida comp the "Florida Championships" (Vilano) or the "Boardwalk Blow up" ( Indialantic). It's perfectly legal for me to call it that but is it cool to do that? I say no. Respect goes along way. So does research.

It's also the fact their using the name in an area with high Skim Invasion activity. Sort of to the point of making it seem like it's a Skim Invasion event. And no we don't own the name. There was an event before ours that used Throwdown (flatland one up in the Northwest).

Frank, the boys that say they are "running it" arent the brightest ones. I talked to both of them today and from what I can tell, this will be an epic failure. Both of the guys (if you do contact Tim) will most likely not give you any stress on the name. I already laughed in their faces when they told me about it.

Alright i talked to Drew and Spencer today, the brains behind all of this, and its somewhat like a just for fun. There will be three age divisions and it is also a Fluid Skim team tryout.

Done quote me but from what i heard the top two riders from each group will be given a spot on the fluid skim team. So its a little bit of both. They are going to wait a week before the contest to pick a spot, and Tim is doing all the behind the scenes work with the permits and everything, and Drew and Spencer are going to plan all the skim stuff. They have never thrown a contest, nor have any experience in organization of events.

No clue if there will be prizes or anything but I hope they do not mess this up and ruin skimboarding competitions for everyone else around here, so hopefully everything goes well with it and good luck to the fluid skim team.

what's all the stress about? these guys seem to be trying to organize a small little contest for people to come together and skim. it's just a name guys... if someone wanted to call a contest green eggs and am, i'd think it silly to use the same name paulo and i used but whatever let them have their contest and bring skimmers together.

The biggest stress is making sure they get permits.

One wrong move at some of these beaches and it could send back skimming 5 years. Skimboarding's relationship with a handful counties and cities in Florida is really delicate.

And I disagree about other people using event names.

But I do feel better that Tim is more active in this event. Should go through the proper channels.

Derek or Dale or Bart please delete this thread. I have worked it all out and got things worked out.


And until this is deleted, I will say this. We are trying to create an identity all our own. All be it yeah we can't tell people not to use our names. And we are not upset with people trowing events. But we are for skimming, skimboarders, and the progression of the sport. If other people, as Robs said, throw an event without going through the proper channels, then it could hurt us when we try to get a permit. And yes it has happened many times in other towns where someone throws an event and the county says well " you skimmers " threw an event without a permit last time so no and don't waste our time. Long story short.

Let's take Oktoberfest for example.

That's an established term for an event. (beer drinking)

But in skimboarding I believe Aaron Peluso owns the rights to that. Now if someone in New Jersey took that and used it...it's one thing.

But if someone took it and threw an event in Soulag with Oktoberfest...that's over the line.

The biggest deal is the permits. One wrong action could hurt our own event (and our new camps). We wanted to get the scoop in order to maybe warn the city, "HEY THIS IS NOT US!" Because like Frank said we ran into the exact situation in South Florida when trying to get permits.

Oktoberfest and Green eggs and am are a little more unique than the work throwdown. thats so general. who gives a shit. if you want to make an identity why not use somthing more unique so things like this never happen. just saying.

Maybe invest a lot of time into a name and someone in your home town uses the same name. Sort of messed up in my view but the biggest thing is the permits. The name keeps coming up from you guys complaining...it's not a huge deal. Steve Taylor understands the effort put into events but he's the only one with a valid point of view.
