just curious, is one step dropping in general less cool or important for inlanders? i've noticed most people chase their boards in inland, is it to gain more speed?

it's just not necessary in flatland (most cases). . i feel i can get more sped with a 2-3 step drop when approaching a rail .. might just be in my head though...

Its interesting in flatland skim there are so many ways of getting on your board compared to wave skimboarding. You have the briefcase drop, one step, and then the throw and chase method. Since there is no problem with trying to reach waves and the fact that our beaches don't have slope, the one step doesn't seem the most effective way of getting on your board in flatland. Most sponsored riders, do some type of chase ranging between 2-5 steps or do the briefcase drop which really is basically no steps at all. With flatland skim its more about comfort, and what works best for the rider. A rail unlike waves is not going to change locations, which basically allows you to time your approach fairly easily. I have never found gaining enough speed to conquer a given rail very difficult, its more about foot placement, timing, balance since flatland is all about how tech you can get.

that's what i was thinking, and realized that a one step drop is really only essential to ocean skimming because at times slope is steep or there is only a split second opportunity to drop your board in a good spot. Thanks for the post, i found it interesting.... But i still think the briefcase drop is weird haha.

Kayotic team riders - Dane Clark, Myles Delange, and half of vancouver island (B.C.) all do the brief case drop. The greatest advantage of the briefcase drop in flatland is that you can pop tricks the moment you jump on the board because you are already in position to do so, and it requires less water because you can literally run on the sand to gain speed, much like a one step in wave skim. It looks dope as well. The biggest disadvantage it is harder to do in any type of cross wind and you have less room for error.

One of the coolest thing about flatland that is rarely shown in videos is that you can literally pop a trick/ land, kick the board out from under your feet, run after it and jump on it again to pop another trick. Sort of like lines in street skating, its just something that is really hard to film, thats why it is not usually featured in videos.

The catalogue should be done next week, just waiting on a few things from various people.

Noah: I wasn't saying the briefcase drop is better, was just letting everyone know that there are some advantages and disadvantages to it. Myles and Dane, really make it work. I personally do a chase and so do the majority of flatland skimboarders. So if you look at the numbers then I guess the chase is the best, I just think the briefcase looks steezy and I do it sometimes just for kicks. Almost all the top riders can jump on their boards anyway you ask them but when it comes down to performance they go with what they feel comfortable with.

    i defenitely agree with comfort
the briefcasedrop would be really good in a tight spot
justto make sure is the brief case drop when you are hloding the nose and then drop, skim
or when you are holding the side, drop, skim?

btw lynch i ve got a few questions for the nz history interview i am making a few more so i will email you when ive got them all wont be long

traditionally, the briefcase drop is when you hold the side of your board, start running, get up to full speed and slip the board under your feet to skim. For Goofy hold your board with your left hand, makes the trick way easier and smoother, for regular the reverse.

yea I started briefcase dropping when I flatland. I really like it.

I want to see how effective it is in wave skimming. bobby from vilano does it and that was the first time I had ever seen it.

Haven't tried it, but somehow it feels like it'd be easier to do the opposite. Left hand when regular and right hand when goofy..

I guess I'll just have to try and see what feels best.

The problem with using your front hand to drop the briefcase is you usually have to take an extra step and you lose speed. By using your front hand you have to sort of toss your board under and in front of you, but if you use your back hand you can literally place the board under your feet and carry way more speed. Either way give the briefcase a try its a good move to learn in general, just to have something to use in tight spots.
