    Default board build-off

i had a revelation yesterday. if everybody is always competing over which is the best board, why dont we have an "ultimate board build" with all the major manufacturers and smaller shapers competing to win the title. to rate them, we could have an online raffle among a random group of skimmers, of various skill levels and locations. any takers?

it's an interesting idea, but it's not like there is one ultimate board, people have certain preferances and different styles, not to mention how much conditions affect board performance

it would probably work better if it was broken down into different categories based on certain board specs and/or conditions, that would narrow it down a bit, and instead of just saying "this company makes the best board and those other ones arent as good" you could say "this company makes better boards for small liners without much push and that other company makes better boards for really heavy shorebreak" or "this companies board is tougher but that companies board has more float"

either way i think it's kind of a pipe dream, though

we tried to do a board review a year ago in ForeverSkim. it ended with some boosted egos and some hurt feelings, and really no clear way to determine a victor of any sort, which we didn't even attempt to do. Didj prophet summed it up pretty good in that there are far too many variables to accurately come to any sort of conclusion.

I think it would be a good idea if you had like an event where each pro rider would ride each board in a 10-20 min session it could be a like exhibition type deal and then each pro would vote on which board rode the best. But ofcourse on that day and what wave they decided to ride.

It would be a neat idea though

Even if that happened/ was possible, all logos would have to be removed, and all board would have to be the same colors so as to tell as little difference as possible.

thats doable...it could be part of the UST, in different locations so as to cater to different breaks, with krisstones idea with the pros 10-20 minute sessions...

my last name sounds like buca...so thats why

I think it would be a cool idea to kick around if different users on here built their own boards and put up pictures afterwards and let other user's vote, just on looks alone and then get someone to take pictures of them or someone else, using it, to show it works. I think it would be more fun like that and alot more likely than the big companies playing in this game..

dont forget that pros have board sponsors, the voting would have to be anonymous to avoid them directly endorsing boards other then their sponsor, also, different boards feel different and a lot of the time take a little bit to get used to when youve been riding another manufacturers boards for awhile, so i would venture to guess that most of the pros would end up voting for their sponsors boards anyway, even if there was no real way to tell which board was from which manufacturer

while the skill level of pros would be an important factor to differentiate between the pros and cons of different boards, the fact that they have board sponsors complicates things, and it would probably work better with people that are not sponsored

edit: for the above reasons i agree with the past couple comments, i think it would work better with the small scale manufacturers

Most of it boils down to preference anyway...

It would be cool, yes, but I doubt many (enough to have a cotest) have the time or money to do so. I would try and fail misserable most likely, but I would have no idea where to get a foam blank to start with. All I have going for me is some fiberglassing experience, and some skateboard shaping.

    it should be

"the lowest costing board of each manufactuer"
    "off the rack"
(off a distributor Skim City/Skim Shop to counter additional "modding")
    "the average weight catagory"

I'm going to use my personal veto on this idea.

Even if you removed all of the logos, and had pros pick and choose what they wanted to ride and in what condition, it's not scientific enough to come up with any sort of result, or to have anything to measure results against.

what would it be, a pro comes up and says "that wave was fun. the board was fast and turned well"? then the next pro takes it for a spin and says that the board wasn't so fun, and that it lacked float.

where does that leave you? no discernable conclusions, nothing concrete.

the only possible way to do this, and i think aaron and i talked about this before and he could tell what his ideas were, but would be do it only scientifically, as in stress tests and durability tests, floatation tests, things like that.

    i'm with dzan. personal veto.

I went there when I visited family in Michigan. It's really good, and they give you insane portions.

I don't know how many boards you all have owned or looked at with a serious eye, but it would be very easy for top riders to figure out which board he or she is riding.

That's because its family style. Meaning they portion the food out for the whole table, not just one person.

Doing stength tests on all the major companies would be a good idea. Then we could see if comanies can back up their claims for the longest lasting board and so forth. Float tests wouldn't really mean much because isn't float pretty much the surface area touching the water?

hahaha, seriously, its been concluded 4 or 5 times so far that this is unrealistic and unnecesary, but it keeps on going, so when in rome......

i would be interested to see something where objective, scientific tests are performed on different boards, stress tests, float tests etc, it would be a good reference for people that are always coming on here to ask which manufacturer is better and get 10 different answers, that way they could look at the results and decide which factors are more important to them, plus it would help the manufacturers see where they all stand in relation to eachother, and show them areas they could work on improving their boards

all we need is some objective, intelligent people with experience in the required fields and enough money to buy 2-3 boards from every manufacturer

in other words, this will never happen

We didn't know that when we ordered, but we did when we left with 3 days worth of food.
