makes sense to me, except additional bureaucracy and technology would be needed to track mileage.
it doesn't matter for me because i get to write it all off anyway!

Are you guys serious? What a fracking terrible concept. Put a government GPS in my car? How about frack you, I'll tear that shit out and leave it on the coffee table. First they put the GPS in your car to track your mileage then five years down the road it's, "Well we can tell when your speeding everytime so we're going to start ticketing automatically." Then it's, "Oh well since we can tell when you drive on any road we don't need toll booths, so they won't slow down traffic, so now the interstate is a toll road and taking it will run you 25cents a pop." How about tax fracking gas according to the new average per car so people who don't drive SUVS aren't paying the taxes of the people that do.
Silky, I really want to poke fun at you and say "right and gay marriage now means 10 years from now people will be trying to marry animals." Too bad I agree with your point.

I was going to say the same thing but it was easier to quote someone in a similar situation to me. I disagree with a "tracking" system. A system that works is already in place, why re-invent the wheel?Originally Posted by $ilky $kim
i thought it was about taxing cars with low mpg, which would be a better idea
this idea is terrible tough. taxing based on how many mile you drive? the whole gps thing is impractical. the easiest way to do that would be to put a tax the amount of gas you use. oh wait we already do that.

Next they'll say "oh its also good to fight terrorism" and everyone will drink up the kool aid.
Seems like more government in this situation will not fix the problem.
I am already getting tired of the new ways the government is trying to create entirely new tax programs.

different gas price for every car that pulls up to the pump? how would that work?Originally Posted by silky skim

and i think philosophically, the idea is sound. people should pay for the upkeep of roads according to the amount they drive on them. however, the alternative would be to just keep raising the tax on gas as cars become more and more gas efficient. cars and trucks with lower fuel efficiency would pay a greater portion of the tax buden but maybe it's poetic justice and would further encourage people to adopt fuel-efficient cars.
But we all know this money would not be used on just roads.
The idea like all the new tax programs is just there to supplement all the BS.
It's like Virginia creating all these new tolls...but a huge chunk is now going into a rephrasing project of Downtown Richmond. (which is not needed, and half the tolls are outside the Greater Richmond area)
I am all for new infrastructure but again I don't want GPS systems in my car. I am not a crazy libertarian but it comes to point of, "Where do we draw the line?"
I think a perfect model would be to start with commercial trucking and work back.

better get ready to provide a shit ton more mass transportation to accommodate the influx of people using it to avoid the tax.

If you need to derive more taxes for road maintenance (i.e. if revenue generation is actually decreasing) why not just proportionally raise taxes on gasoline?
No GPS costs. Existing infrastructure. Raises the same amount of money. Increases the incentive to drive a fuel efficient car.
Taxing miles decreases the existing financial dis-incentive to buying fuel efficient vehicles. i.e. a step backward.

yea I dont understand why we dont just raise the gas tax. It would create incentive to buy more fuel efficient cars or travel less (which snags up those that use the road more). I just think they dont want people to freak out and look at 2.50 to 3.00 at the pump again and flip shit, but it just makes more sense to do it that way.
thats where I said no.even going so far as to install GPS monitoring devices in 300 vehicles
It wouldn't, I said raise by average. See Peluso post for explanation.Originally Posted by BART
