Anybody ever remove cosmoline?!
Reviving the lost art of manliness
lots of break free, I've talked to people who put parts in the oven at like 250 degrees. Pouring boiling water over the parts works great too just make sure you try thouroughly and oil.

yeah, oven + blow dryer or any reliable heat source. ive found the easiest way if u are in a place where you can do this safely is to just leave the gun outside for a day in direct + hot sunlight. but realize that if any porous material like wood is going to continue to sweat oil on hot days for a long time.
any good degreaser or strong cleaner (ie gunslick foaming cleaner) that isn't mixed with oil to get the cosmo off the metal will speed things along too.
Mineral spirits is supposed a good cosmoline eater, and im gonna go with the blowdryer, thanks for the help guys.
Another question, anyone care to share some good surplus ammo sites?

You have a mosin, so J and G sales from arizona. Buy the big spam cans of it, and its corrosive so just make sure you clean your rifle after every use.
They also ship there stuff in coffee boxes so your hippy neighbors dont think you re a terrorist

Lose the light and laser if its going to be scoped. Bipod is way too far back for optimal stabilization. frack it, ditch the scope and the hand rail and add an ACOG.
Hahah. You sound like me, and he called me a buzzkill. The multicam is in a good enough spot. He just put the light/laser on (hence the dropped pressure switches), and hasn't mounted those yet. The scope is a piece of shit BSA that was on a Mini-14. He's taking it off once he get's the laser where he wants it.

Tell him to ditch the handle and mount a flip up rear iron sight assembly.
need advice:
so im going to start saving up for my one of my last purchases for probably a long while:
want a "battle rifle" .308 (or 30-06 if something exists). unfortunately, any half decent FAL is not possible in CA (else I'd get this and be done). not a huge hk91 or m1a/m14 fan - m1a is great but i have yet to personally shoot or see one that really appeals to me. it'd also be nice to be able to take a 500+ yd shot for when im in the mood, but not totally necessary (i know battles rifles usually are usually 1-2MOA+ rifles).
thinking of the following now:
- get an m1 garand - not exactly what im looking for but its really fun. maybe get an m1 carbine to go along with it?
- ar in 308 - would rather get an m1 garand, more fun.
- ak in 308 - apparently they make these now, but again, id probably pick a garand over this.
- save more money get a scar17 - google did not help much here. maybe a bit mall ninja but a good rifle is a good rifle? and can or do these do 1MOA? also i think the general rule is don't shoot 308 from a 7.62(scar17) regularly b/c of pressure differences, but maybe you guys have heard otherwise?
- frack guns, save money to go on a cruise to the antarctic and see penguins - not joking.
any other suggestions?
I like the way sealice thinks.
penguin first gun I'm buying after I graduate is an m1a/m14. I am just a huge fan of the platform. My friend has a some sort of scar, i have never fired it but if feels really nice and he speaks very highly about it.

My son has an AR just like this (less scope). I'm not a big fan of AR's. For home defense, I like my pump shot gun. Why? Because an AR is just a high powered 22, not much knock-down power. A shot gun on the other hand is
AR's are a really good sniper rife though, which I think most of the police use.

Definitely. My self defense is 3" special 12ga birdshot and 230gr FMJ .45ACP. God help anyone that breaks into my house.

The thing good about bird shot is it doesn't penetrate walls like the AR.

Home defense is a Taurus Judge .45/.410 2.5" ... Not quite 3" 12g (Sam ^) but it would do the job.
I'm here for a good time, not a long time.
home defense is a bolt lock.
jim, i think its 410 can shoot the 45 long colt. doubt it b/c of higher pressures and such but maybe 454 casull too???
anyways, it seems like u guys are suggesting an m1a. since ive only shot the scar16 before i guess ill have to try a m1a and scar17 back to back next time im out of state - doubt any place in south ca would have both available for rental. was kind of hoping u guys would push me towards a garand and m1 carbine but i guess time will tell.
sealice - which "trim" or "model" of the m1a is that? is it something like those sage m1a's but at a more "basic" trim level or a factory springfield?
The Garand is a great gun, but I like the smaller size of the M1 carbine myself.
I almost bought one a few years ago, it was from WWll..... I wish I would have.=(

This. .410 can shoot .45LC. Don't try it though hah. The pressure difference is way too much for a thin shotgun barrel to handle. The Taurus judge is a sweet little piece for home defense though. Completely impractical for anything but 5 yard shots, but still a rad gun. A lot of moms I know carry those things in purses...just because with .410 shells in such a short barrel, aiming isn't really required.

very seriously thinking about getting a new gun lately. Kind of thinking about building an AR-15.. any advice or recommendations?

my girlfiend's dad has an m1 carbine and I love it. I would go with anything in the m1 or m14 family. m1 garand is a top choice of mine, but I would personally go with the carbine m14 or m1a platform for the detachable magazine.
