    Exclamation ATTN guitar people...few questions

ive always been messing around with my guitar but today i broke my skring
first question, do any strings fit any guitar? if so what are some cheaps decent ones, not looking for amazing quality because i suck.

also one of my tuner knob things is missing

anyone know where i could snag one of those?

lastly, should i bother taking lessons? i know a bunch of chords and all but some stuff just loses me. all im really interested in is fracking around, maybe writing some songs or somthing idk, nothing to technical, but id like to learn how to play pretty well. so lessons or no?

    thanks

I never took lessons up until 2 or 3 years ago. Since then, my playing has improved drastically. I don't go all the time anymore. I get lessons for free from him; I am his "best student". So, yah. My vote is definately take 'em. But NOT, I repeat, NOT from someone who is going to just teach you songs. That is so dumb and such a waste of money. Get someone who will teach you how to play, and why you play it. Not someone who you say you like a certain song, they look up the tabs, and show you how to play it. Get the person to teach theory. Its worth it and you will thank me in 2 years, especially if you want to start writing some songs.

You could snag a new tuning peg at any of your ocal guitar shops. They are relatively cheap and they will put it in for you. Any acoustic strings should work. (I assume by looking at the pic) YOu would probably want to stick with martin strings, they are the best. Get a set of 9s, meaning the 9 is the size of the smallest string. If you don't know how to proprly change strings, and yes you need all of them, get them to do it for you. Also, if you wnat it to sound and feel better, get them to set it up for you. If they look at you funny, please by all means grab your guitar and leave. If they can't set up a guitar or don't know what you mean, they are worthless and shouldn't be in a music shop.

any stings really work, but d'adarrio's are pretty good and fairly cheap. as far as a tuning head, you're going to have to find a music shop with a parts section, which sometimes can be hard. you can order a single whole new tuner for around 10 bucks, but you would need to know some stuff about the hole in your headstock to make sure you got the right tuner. I suggest just supergluing either the old tuning head or something like the old tuning head to that stub of metal and using it like normal, so get creative! or just try and find a shop with a good parts section

9's on an acoustic? Always thought gauges ran a bit higher on them. 9s feel great on my new sl3 anyways

Edit: yeah 12's might suit ya better, as for the brand i have no idea, don't have any acoustics.

dude. a penny as a tuning peg. lol i think that would look sick. lol. but yeah.u can probly just get one at a music shop. (they can probly fix it too) and for strings, just go to a music shop and buy some. lol. if u wanna be like a really good guitar player, like someone said, (im to lazy to go see who it is) get lessons from someone who teaches theory. i think my teacher teaches like that. ( its really boring at first). or,u can dowload power tab editor. then u can download the files for the songs u want. and it tells u where to put ur fingers and what it sounds like too. and its free

yeah i mean im looking for enough skill to write a couple simple songs similar to somthing like jack johnson, or if youve heard of him, a guy that goes buy nevershoutnever. i know i know, pretty cliche and gehh but it makes me feel good soo its all cool. im not trying to learn theory or anything just like the skills to throw some stuff together.

if not lessons, do you recommend any techniques, or websites, or anything like that?? thanks

You are a dumbass. Don't listen to this asshat. Like I said, if you wnat to learn WHY you are playing the scales and why they are all related, get lessons from a GOOD teacher. Your playing will grow immensely. If you learn all by internet tabs, your style and knowledge of the instrument will suffer. I can tell if a person really knows what they are doing, or if they are just playing memorized licks from other songs thy learned from the interweb. If you want to have a good solid foundation, find a good teacher. A huge thing about having lessons is that the teacher can give you personalized feedback. Not everyone has the same strengths and weaknesses. I know that my vibrato was quite weak when I started taking lessons, but I had a good picking hand. I can't stress enough that a good teacher will work wonders on your playing. It all depends on where you wnat to go. Hell, I'll give you lessons. haha You live relatively close don't you? hah.

    asshat. nice comeback bro.

who knows.. he probably doesnt have enough cash to get a teacher. you think most great guitar players had teachers back then? no some started off having no cash and just started palying and practicing . and thats why you make covers you get personal feedback form ppl around the world not just one person.

A quick youtube video would give you a little more credibility. Just a thought. Also It's not like you cant teach yourself how to play guitar, but you learn so much faster when you have a good teacher.

any strings will work and fit on your acoustic (assuming you get acoustic strings, but that's pretty much a no brainer :P)

there are different gauges you'll want to by, they usually go by light, medium, and heavy. I usually stick with lights just because I like playing fast stuff on acoustic. Check out Elixir strings (costly, but if you don't change your strings much this is the way to go), John Pearse strings, Everlys, or Martins.

as for lessons, I wish I continued further with them, but my teacher wasn't that great. The most I learned from him was how to tune the guitar and the pentatonic scale, as well as playing in key. Those are pretty important to know, and youtube won't teach you that as well as in person. You may want to wait on the lessons and decide if you want them as you get better and get more into the guitar.

I never ever said that you can't learn without a teacher, but like someone said, you will learn a lot faster with one.

20$ is very expensive for strings.... You should be looking at around 5 or 6$ a pack... Unless you are getting super nice ones, i guess?

This is a great article to look at in helping decide what you want out of lessons.

Yah, khoi made a god point. Elixer makes a pretty unique string. You might like 'em. I don't really because of the feel, but they don't rust out like many strings do. They have a special coating that cames them slick... You might want to check those out. A few dollars more, but worth it if you like 'em.

elixers are the best for acoustic. all strings are cheap. most range from 5 to 15 bux. replace all the strings. don't get the ones that have the coating. kills the sound of an acoustic.

I don't know about you guys, but I love my Elixirs and can't play any other strings. I like a nice bright sound which is what Elixirs give, and with my Taylor, it's quite amazing. Uncoated strings don't work too well for me, after one week they start to rust and the sound gets so muddy because of the humidity in Florida.

I have yet to use any other strings, but I just got a pair of John Pearse strings that I'm gonna try out after my Elixir's tone wears out
