    Default conversion to a 4x4

Does anyone here know how to convert a 2 wheel drive truck to a 4 wheel drive truck? I've done a little research but it's hard to get anyones help. I just recently bought a chevy truck out of haste because my last car was totalled. So needless to say i wasn't able to shop around, i just had to buy what was available and in my price range at the time. I love the truck and i don't really want to trade up to a 4x4 because i've already done some work on it recently. Besides i want something to do when the waves are flat year round on the gulfcoast. Off-roading's the next best thing.

hell yah its the next best thing. haha You can do it, I know a few guys who have done it with tacomas, but it is quite costly. For a tacoma it ran around 2000 for parts. Most of my knowledge (which isn't muchin the first place) about trucks is geared towards tacomas and I dont have much expirience with chevy. All I can really say is to trade in your chevy for a taco and make it solid front axle. haha :P No, but good luck bro, and I would love to know/see what you have done to it so far.

4WD conversions aren't worth doing unless you have acquired all of the parts extremely cheap and have LOTS of time on your hands. trade it in and get something with 4WD.

I agree... a lot of work, money, and time will go in to that conversion.

I think it would be a fun project. If I had money, time to relaly spare, and excsessive knowledge about my truck, I would SO do a solid axle swap....

The money you would spend on putting in 4 wheel drive and beating the shit out of it once its done is alot of cash. Just buy a 4 wheeler

Ya, that's what i figured. Since it's flat as hell me and a couple buddies like to go out off roadin. i just bought my truck and i love it to death, i've already put in a new sound system, bought new tires, a bed liner, dual exhaust and an air filter. i don't wanna just trade up. either way i'm gonna be out about 3 grand wether i trade up or just convert it. My only problem is i don't have the time. i friggin hate work.

    no way.
if you were to just buy a mid 90's toyota pickup 4wd, instead of doing all the work for the four wheel you could solid axle it and it would be amazing

mid 90s? Try mid 80s, bro. I have a '95 with IFS. I believe the last year they made the solid front axles were '84......

edit: I am trying to decifer that post. I think you said trade it in for a taco and SAS with it. He wants to keep the same truck, but believe you me, I am all for tacos. haha

dude manual is just the way it has to be. haha. I hated mine at first when i was trying to learn how to drive it, but I love it now. I think manual is better for offroading anyway.

Ya i actually looked at a tacoma but i'm like 6'4 and they're kinda small, the chevy has a lot more leg room for me. i'd love to get a ford ranger actually. i drove one for work for about 6 months and that was the best little pickup i've ever driven. idk, i could definately do my truck up custom, i just suck with mechanics and stuff. My dad is a retired nuclear submarine engineer. he could help me but he's just way too busy with his job and gettin our house fixed up. maybe i'll buy a POS truck to drive around and work on my truck... I JUST WANT frackIN 4 WHEEL DRIVE!

yah bro. Now that I think about it, you would be better off with just getting a 4x4. I just don't relaly like 'american made' trucks. We havent had very good luck with fords, so I dunno. We have 2 toyotas (an 02 camry and my '95 tacoma) and we have never had any problems. If you really want an offroad machine with the toyota reliability, the older tacoma trucks, pre-87 (thanks jake) would be your best bet. Look around the internet for a couple. They are pretty cheap. 3 or 4.

I group all of them together, but we have no personal expirience with dodges... My dad has a 1500 chevy, and the transmission kept slipping and got it fixxed, but hes gettin' reday to buy a tundra. I told him that I want to raise it. haha
