What I don't get is how McCain can say he isn't a socialist if Obama is. A tax cut for the wealthy is just as much a change in the distribution of wealth as an increase for the wealthy is.

We are already a socialist country. We have socialized healthcare (medicare), socialized pensions (social security), socialized highways (interstates), socialized education, socialized military, socialized firemen, socialized police, socialized water provision and in many placed socialized electricity.

The correct use of English is usually a prerequisite to having credibility surpassing that of a fourth grader IMO.
In an absolute free market, the government wouldn't create paved roads. A business would pave their own, and charge you tolls to use them. Since that would be absurd the government paves the road out of tax revenue and lets people ride on them for free, for the most part.
If you support government paved roads, or any public works project, are you a socialist? I would say so.
The lesson to learn is that we are already a socialist country, the argument is to what degree. So when you hear someone spout "so and so is a socialist" as an insult, you can presume that person has absolutely no idea what socialism is other than a bad word.

alot of infastructure (i.e. highways, bridges, parks) are already heavily subsidized by the federal government, which means the cost of upkeep and new projects comes in a large part from the taxes we all pay, that means they're closer to a socialized system... The riots come over notions like universal health care, that would be a kind of socialized medicine, and it would also raise peoples taxes. In my opinion, socialism is the best way to achieve a fair playing ground in areas like healthcare and public service, right wingers will argue that all the government needs to supply you with is defense and the opportunity to make a living, but it's hard to pull yourself up by the bootstraps when they're concreted to a sidewalk in harlem with 2 mcdonalds within the community and 2000 people who need work, frack the rich, tax them and give the desemated middle class the chance to catch up again, all of us would benefit...
