Little groggy this morning but last night I indulged in:
1) Fantome Saison - My favorite Saison, hands down. Slight sour notes, combining with light grain, and the patented farm-house funk found in great Saisons make this an amazing beer. The one I finished off last night was a 750 (Think red-wine bottle). I should have stopped here... but I didn't.
2) Home-Brew Wild Belgian Witbeir- I have discussed this hombrew in this thread before. As time is going on, the Brettanomyces used to ferment this brew out, has been changing and aging to create a really nice bouquet. The beer has a crisp, sour, and tart taste with a smooth finish. I am honestly surprised that I made this!
3) Dicks Cream Stout- We have discussed this one before. Dick Cream, ha ha, and what-not... If anyone has access to this beer, then you should give it a try, but its not the most amazing Cream/Milk/Sweet Stout in the world.

I got a few bombers of the Sierra Nevada Summer Harvest Fresh Hop Ale. It was their first time offering it, and is brewed the same way as the Wet Hop (dry-hopped with fresh, right-off-the-bine hops), except the hops come from New Zealand, as their harvest time is during our spring. It was awesome. I think I'll pick up a case of the 12th Anniversary next time I'm in the distributor.Originally Posted by greckyyy

HAHA. I had a similar experience last night. I went to a CKY show at Bam Margera's club last night and was pleasantly surprised at their draft selection -most notably Victory Hop Wallop. As DIPAs go, this one is phenomenal. And I took full advantage of its availability - much to my own detriment. Many of the DIPAs I've had always seemed to have a far greater sweet alcohol flavor. Others tried maybe too hard to balance the brew through aggressive hopping, and they often come out as harsh. This one is firmly balanced, and a great example of the style.Originally Posted by robsawyer

I love some Hop Wallop. Their stormking stout also always has a place in my fridge. I think this beer doesn't get the respect it deserves due to it's wide availabilty. I hate the fact that these days rarity = better beer. If Stormking was only released at the brewery on Stormking day I bet people would be going ga ga over it.Originally Posted by waddsworth

Ohh- and I am sitting at my desk, working on a project that is honestly a bit above my head right now, with Oracle Forms / PL/SQL / BLOB files, and I find myself continually drifting off with thoughts about what I will drink tonight after my run... Twin Sister DIPA, Ruination, Jubelale?.
Killed off a crap load of great beers last night at Rick's house while homebrewing and watching football. Some of the few that stick out are:
Deschutes Dissident - American Wild Ale
Portsmouth Oud Brune - Belgian Oud Brune (Brown Ale with Belgian Funk / Sour / Tartness)
Ten Fiddy - 12 oz canned imperial stout
Spent my weekend drinking nothing but Kona.Originally Posted by RickSawyer

It has a slightly bitter taste that I find appealing.
Then I drank a 6 of Kona Pipeline Porter (limited release). I definitely liked that one. It has an earthy taste, very smooth, very drinkable.

Went to a beer festival on Saturday. Had some amazing beers, unfortunately most were so obscure that I could probably never remember them again to buy them even if I wanted too....
I do remember though that Fuller's Vintage Ale was frackin amazing!!!
Although any beer that comes in a single box for one bottle means its probably too pricey for my likes...
And Pipeline Porter from Kona Brewery could turn any coffee drinker into an alcoholic. I could drink one of those every morning...
Wish I could remember some of the other good beers I had there. I'm sure as I'm walking down the isles of World Of Beers, or Total Wine and Spirits I'll recognize the bottles again though...
When Obama took office, you were only paying $1.95 per gallon of gas...
Do you remember the styles or tastes that you enjoyed? We certainly could recomend some similar brews.Originally Posted by Utah

Unfortunately I dont. I like a wide variety of styles, but dont have a well defined enough palet to identify what I like in each of them. I do know that I like Stouts, porters, ales (pretty much all ales I've tried except for pale ales), lagers in general, etc... I also know that have yet to have an IPA that I truely enjoyed. Of course I could drink them, but never ordered more than one of them... I'm also not too partial to belgium lambic brews... And during the festival there was only 1 beer that I wouldn't finish. If I remember correctly, it was an Oak barrel bourbon ale (I felt bad because after I took a sip I leaned over to my gf and said, "this taste like shit. aww, its awful, here try this, its horrible". I then find out moments later that the brewer of this beer was standing right next to me <open mouth, insert foot>...Originally Posted by robsawyer
I did find out though that there is a store not far from me that caters to home brewers and wine makers. They had a booth set up and they had a great red ale. I grabbed a flier from them and am thinking of stopping by some day this week to find out what it would cost me to get a setup to start brewing. I explained to the guy that I was a complete novice at it but its something I've wanted to do for years. He said they have lots of beginer setup and they're used to helping out newbs...
I've read parts of you and your brothers blog on brewing and find it facinating. Just the concept that you are able to create something that your friends and family can enjoy really intrigues me. Like I said, its been something I've wanted to start doing for years now, maybe this weekends little festival was the kick in the ass I needed to actually begin...

You should give it a shot! I started out with the most basic homebrew kit needed-Originally Posted by Utah
2 - 6 Gallon Buckets
1 - Bucket Top with no Air Lock
1 - Bucket Top with an Air Lock
(An Air Lock is a contraption that allows bi-product of fermenting yeast (CO2)to exit the bucket)
1 - Air Lock
1 - Siphon Hose
1 - 5 Gallon Stainless Steel Pot
1 - Propane Grill Gas Tank
1 - Cheap Gas Cooker (think of the thing people use to boil crawfish or crabs)
1 - Bottle of Star San sanitizer
1 - Hydrometer (a device that measures the amount of sugar in a liquid. Yeast turns fermentable sugars into alcohol - the hydrometer has a scale on it, and the more sugar in a solution, the higher it floats. As the amount of fermentable sugars decrease, the hydrometer sits lower in the solution. You can use your original reading and final reading to find your ABV.)
You can get a kit like this and brew really great beers. Your local store should have a set up like this (minus the propane and the cooker thing, I had to get that stuff at a sporting goods store). Your local store will probably have beer kits available too (I would stick to extract for my first brews - this means that the grain has already been processed and the fermentable sugars and grain proteins have been extracted into a syrup-y / molasses like liquid.) I recommend trying something fairly flavorful, as light beers are some of the hardest to brew.
coors may not be a new beer but i still have a place in my heart for coors original, i think its got one of the better tastes for mass consumption or just having a beer. haha i just like how it tastes as a beer, im not a huge fan of sam adams though, fosters is good too, and Heineken.
Picked up a case of Racer 5 IPA from Bear Republic tonight.
Its self-described as "an aggressively styled IPA", and being a West Coast brew should have meant "hop-bomb". But this is incredibly balanced. The up-front bitterness is more slight grapefruit with pine and lemon peel, and is followed by a nice warm caramel flavor, and finishes with your typical grapefruit-hop sensation. Oh yeah, and its a nice punch to the olfactory when you hear that "psshhh" as you pop the cap.
This is a brew that will certainly appeal to the hop-head, but not at the exclusion of the occasional IPA dabbler, or even a first-timer.
There's a good chance you've handled my ass-pennies. That gives me the edge.
Very good for this fall weather we've been having:

Racer 5 is a great (and balanced, which is rare for some of the great) IPA. I forget that we have it down here sometimes which is a shame, as it really is a great beer.Originally Posted by waddsworth
Tonight I had (in celebration of Obama)
1) Orval Trappist (Belgian Blonde Ale)
2) De Proef Imperial White Ale
3) Rick's home-brewed cider
4) Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale - GREAT IPA
5) Old Rasputin Imperial Stout
All great beers.
I will raise you with the all mighty 120 Min. Dogfish Head. At 20-22% ABV and 120 IBU (bittering units) this beer is extreme as they come (and pretty palatable!)Originally Posted by skimcowboy
Is Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale an IPA? I remember that from the beer festival and I liked it... Hmm, could very well be the first IPA I actually enjoyed...Originally Posted by robsawyer

My favorite is Landshark Lager for semi-new American beers. Also Sam Adams Cherry Wheat.
Foreign beer would have to be Pilsner Urquell. It's from Czech. OG Pilsner, not like Natty Light.
Royal Blue Beavers Skim
You guys are lucky. It's illegal in Ontario for beer to be cheaper than 24 for $23.35 (plus deposit).
Getting slammed.
Too many microbrews to list good ones.
I'm so adjective, I verb nouns!
A couple from recent memory... Had a Oskar Blues Ten Fidy (what, canned Russian Imperial Stout? frack YEAH!) last night. Kick ass, dark fruit forward impy stout. Got used to the roasty imps so this was a nice change of pace. Tonight I am having a 2007 Pike's Old Bawdy Barleywine. Very good, more of an English Style Barleywine with the muted hops but very nice overall. If you have ever had North Coast's Old Stock Ale, imagine a young Old Stock with a bit less mouthfeel.
Love,
Rick

We're drinking Banks right now! We had it in the Barbados (it's like the only beer we drank for a week), and for the longest time is wasn't imported into the US. We scored it at Publicks today and it's as good as we remember.
I just finished off a 750 of De Proef and Alagash Deux Brassieres. An American brewer took his strain of wild yeast to Belgium and met up with "The Professor" (De Proef) who has his own special strain of wild yeast and they made a wild ale. It is incredible. Blonde, light, fruity, and hints of amazing wild (Bret) yeast.
SHIP THAT MAN SOME BELLS! And while you're at it, ship some to me!Originally Posted by kylebaz

Seriously - I will pay for it!
I'm staying in tonight, gotta be up bright and early tomorrow. But I have infront of me a Sierra Nevada Anniversary Ale and I'm loving it... Speaking of Oberon, I almost picked up one of those little mini regrigerator kegs of that tonight while at the store. But I didn't... Maybe next time... I did pick up a 12er of the aniversary ale though as well as a 6 pack of a local florida brew that I've never had before. Thought I would give it a shot tomorrow while tail gaitting...
