    Default Good Labtops

Since no one will reply to the other thread, I guess I'll just make a new one.

I doubt my computer will turn back on, haven't tried yet but if it does I'll shit my pants. So, I'll probably be in the market for a new computer. Since this was so unexpected the budget is pretty limited. I'd really, really prefer to get another Mac, but I dunno. For one, I'd rather get a MacBook Pro since I had a few problems with the MacBook (two hard drive fails in a year and a half). There's no way I can afford the Pro though. But, I know they came out with a new model of the Macbook since I bought mine, so I'm not sure if that one has the same problems.

Also, I was looking at iMacs since I don't really ever take my laptop anywhere unless I'm going home or something. I generally just leave it on my desk. Still, the fact of not having a portable computer could get annoying. And, an iMac would be a little more expensive than just getting a Macbook. It is sexy as hell though.

Lastly, my option is to go with a Windows computer because it will be cheaper. Not really what I want to do, but possibly what I have to do . Cheapest I can get a Macbook is $999 brand new with my student discount. Or a refurbed one for $899.

    Refurbed Macbook: $899
Refurbished MacBook 2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo - White
    13.3-inch glossy widescreen display
    1GB memory
    120GB hard drive
    Combo drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW)
    Built-in iSight camera

    Refurbed iMac: $949
Refurbished iMac 20-inch 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    20-inch glossy widescreen display
    1GB memory
    250GB hard drive
    8x SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT with 128MB memory
    Built-in iSight Camera

There is a one year warranty on refurbed computers.

And then I'd like some good Windows laptops that are affordable (aka same level as Macbook but cheaper).

Im actually very happy with my dell xps. I got a lot of shit for ordering one (I initially did want a Mac but the price killed it for me,) and have been very happy since. Had it for quite a few months now and not 1 single problem.

Yea, I really want to. Plus, I have shit I bought for Mac (Office, etc) that I feel would be a total waste now. Just don't know if it's affordable, have to talk to the parents.

Also looking at HP after searching through some older threads. HP looks good too.

I might try to hold out for another week for this supposed new MacBook/drop in price (this happened last time, I bought one and the next week they came out with next generation).

1.) Go to Newegg (or similar sites) order parts build a bad ass desktop. for cheap.
2.) frack Vista and Leopard. Install Ubuntu. for free
3.) Enjoy an inexpensive, easily upgraded desktop with all the "pretty" shit of Leopard and the ability to actually do shit of Windows.

and before the inevitable what about office, photoshop, dreamweaver, etc, etc. Check this site for multiple alternatives for each one. once again. for free

HP Pavilions are sick labtops (dv2500 special ed. ooooo) liking it so far but I'd recommend xp over vista unless you know how to maximize vistas capabilities. Also anybody know of ways to eliminate unneeded drivers, folders or other useless space-wasters and make videos stream better?

    Updates:

So, I tried to turn on the computer, no life. The little sleep light came on, but not the screen and absolutely no sound from inside. I think it's fried. I have to wait a bit anyway, so I think I'm gonna hold out (which is going to suck), for these new laptops from Apple.

The only thing I'd need portability for is transporting my computer to and from home on breaks. I like to have it over Thanksgiving, Christmas, and spring break since those are a week plus. I'd actually rather get a desktop though. I don't really like laptops much. Seeing as I prefer note taking by hand and don't ever take my computer to class/library, portability isn't a huge issue. Plus, after using this iMac I've fallen in love. Just not sure how easy it would be to transport 20" iMac home on more than one occasion...

I have to talk to my dad to see what my actually budget is. I'm pretty sure it'll be sub-$1,000 which basically wipes out Mac as of now. I really, really prefer Leopard, but I might just have to deal for a couple years and save up for an iMac. I mean, I guess it's not a huge deal, I'll get better specs in exchange for not a favorable OS.

Actually buying a new computer probably won't happen until next weekend though when I go home. My dad wants to take mine to some place to get it looked at even though I doubt it will be salvageable, he's stubborn. That HP Mike posted looks ideal, but I just don't know how long that deal will last.

Oh, and I do not have a copy of Office for Windows. So I'd either have to torrent or buy it, so factor that in as well.

You that HP 17" I spec'ed above for $899? If you use the coupon code from that site: NB5540

You can save another 30% - I upgraded the proc to 2.2GHz and the video to a nicer (discreet) 9200M GS and the display to a 1680x1050, and shipped (free) it was like $950. That's a smokin' deal.

Yea, I was just looking at that now, but I don't think I'll be able to get a new comp until next week and that deal will be over . DT set me up a sweet HP notebook because right now I think that is going to be my number one option. Is Vista really as bad as people make it out to be? That really is the only thing holding me back from going back to Windows.

Oh and Matt the Mac desktop you're referring to is the iMac, which I said...duh...

I think it sort of rocks. I had one issue with IE7 (not in FF) and I fixed that the other day by simply disabling the two HP add-ins.

Even things like my development database server and programming environment that are flagged as "might not be 100% compatible" have been running rock solid since day one.

I had originally planned on installing XP, but I don't see any point to it now - the machine is Vista ready out of the box - the Wifi-N is fast (~70MBps downstairs), the fingerprint reader works great, camera fire right up under AIM and MSN, the media server stuff with the remote is good - the HDMI out is awesome for movie playback (you can run the TV and LCD at the same time each in native resolution).

It has a card reader for SD/SMS, Card/54 slot, HDMI, 3 USB 2.0, Firewire, VGA, e-SATA (doubles as the 3rd USB).

In power saving mode I got 2 hours on the plane and hadn't gone under 50%.

errmmm I'm leaning more and more towards an HP because I could get a pretty gnar machine instead of a mediocre one for the sake of a preference in OS which really doesn't make a huge difference.

    no.

the whole vista sucks thing has been blown way out of proportion. i have used vista since it came out and never thought omg i want XP. i imagine some people have legitimate reasons for staying with XP, but they're mostly L33t types or into obscure older games/need drivers for their vintage hardware. it's funny though because i even hear old ladies in circuit city going 'oh i hear vista isn't very good'... i just want to go 'you're using email and an internet browser IT DOESNT frackING MATTER.' for general use and modern software/games it's fine.

Plan of action: Wait until this "omg new apple announcement." See if it has anything worth the money. If not, go for an HP or something.
