    Default 5/8" and 3/4" boards

I was wondering what the main differences between the two are?

on the exile site is says 3/4 are better when the waves are less powerful, but im looking for more of an explanation.
I live in florida and mostly skim Vilano beach. I have a zap pro model right now that i learned on, but i want to know my stuff when i have to replace it.

    : )

From what i learned was that 3/4 gives you more float but you sacrifice turning and with a 5/8 you get less speed but more turning and control. 5/8 is used for anywhere that has a powerful shorebreak like cali or anywhere else that breaks hard. 3/4 is for not so powerful waves like long island. This is what i think but probably somone with more knowledge of this can answer for you.

5/8 is good for fast water/powerful breaks while 3/4 gives you more float for breaks that are hard to reach/less powerful. i consider vilano to be a pretty good break and you would probably be fine with a 5/8 but it's really all preference.

I've been debating whether a 5/8 or 3/4. I think I'll just stick to 3/4. MS 3/4 Sexileeee. Possibly small, have yet to decide considering my board now is smaller than both.

Are you from Jacksonville or St. Augustine? Just wondering because I'm there all the time.

I'd go with the 5/8 because Vilano is a pretty heavy shorebreak when it's good and it's not like you cant skim because it's not heavy. It's more about who's riding the board. But use the gut feeling and if that doesn't say anything, 5/8.

If you are just learning, a 3/4 would probably do you better in Vilano.

I have owned multiple 5/8 Exiles. My newest board is 3/4 and I love it. The sacrifice in turning is NOT noticable. It does float better because it sits higher in the water but that is not what I found to be the sickest advantage.... the speed coming back in on the wave or down the line is where the extra float and speed are significantly noticable! I explained this same thing to my buddy, he got one, rode it and was like "oh my... you were right about the speed on the wave!" Especially in Vilano I think you will really like it. My 2 cents.

ps... my set up is ml, 3/4, pro shape, carbon. Also, be sure you get the right size for your weight or none of this matters. Exile will happily advise on that if you call.

Jesse, in response to your blog... i really liked that, but what i don't understand is that some people at exile ( a company that started doing business in 5/8" -if i'm correct) is now saying that 3/4" is the better choice... and next to that.. how come you also think a 3/4' gives more speed? i mean, i think i can call myself an experienced skimboarder, but i reallly don't think 3/4' is faster

Seriously, some of you make it seem like a 5/8 board is slow.

5/8 boards load up better with flex, and that makes them carve better and deliver more snap. 3/4 are more sluggish in the performance area, but do offer a slight benefit when you've reached the wave and are trying to turn off of it have lost most of your speed. Rule of thumb -- don't loose your speed...

Bold statement of the day: When planning out to a wave, there is no discernable difference between 3/4 and 5/8 boards.

But seriously, one thing that makes a HUGE difference in how a board rides is your perception. Now, I'm not trying to get into some Zen of Skimboarding tangent, but if you think your board may be slow, then it will be. If you think your board's gonna be fast, then it will be. Ride different boards and get a feel for what you think works best for you. Some guys in Vilano swear by 3/4 boards, and other won't ride anything but 5/8. It takes some experience to figure it out for yourself.

On a side note, we only make 5/8 boards because if we made a 3/4 board using our standard process, it would be too stiff...and that would suck. I don't have anything against 3/4 boards. We've been considering making 3/4 boards, but well...I'm busy.

exile started making 5/8" in the beginning because that's what chia and ap rode, if i remember correctly. 3/4" foam is more buyount.... and is better fit for smaller waves, they started out of california where small waves don't really exist

i honestly think alot of this depends on drop and running speed and much more than we try to simplify it down to. (anton just said that "When planning out to a wave, there is no discernable difference between 3/4 and 5/8 boards." i think that i feel the biggest difference in speed when planing out to a wave.... so there ya go)
