With all this talk about MPG, combined with my qualified nerd status and interest in cycling, led me to do some calculations...
The other day I rode my bike on a route from UC Irvine to check out west st and aliso (skim sucked..). The route was 32.25 miles and I expended just over 2,000 calories (Kcal) to do it.
A gallon of gas has the equivalent of 34,800 Kcal of energy. If I were to be able to give the equivalent in gallons, me and my bike get about 560 miles per gallon! Eat your heart out, "eco-friendly" high-nosed prius touting sons of bitches!
The night before, I ate a plate of pasta, using 1/2 of a packet I bought for $2. It was about 10oz of pasta (dry weight), and since this pasta is about 210 kcal per 2oz, I consumed a little more than the estimated amount I expended the next day. Cost: $1.
With the current cost of gasoline (avg around here at $3.80/gallon) to get the same falue for fuel, you would have to have a car that got fuel equivalency of 123 MPG.
So, 123 MPG, or 560 MPG. Either way my bike kicks ass. Oh, and I spent less to buy the bike than most of you spend on car insurance. Bitches.
