Default MPG my ass! Or legs. About 560 MPG the other day!

With all this talk about MPG, combined with my qualified nerd status and interest in cycling, led me to do some calculations...

The other day I rode my bike on a route from UC Irvine to check out west st and aliso (skim sucked..). The route was 32.25 miles and I expended just over 2,000 calories (Kcal) to do it.

A gallon of gas has the equivalent of 34,800 Kcal of energy. If I were to be able to give the equivalent in gallons, me and my bike get about 560 miles per gallon! Eat your heart out, "eco-friendly" high-nosed prius touting sons of bitches!

The night before, I ate a plate of pasta, using 1/2 of a packet I bought for $2. It was about 10oz of pasta (dry weight), and since this pasta is about 210 kcal per 2oz, I consumed a little more than the estimated amount I expended the next day. Cost: $1.

With the current cost of gasoline (avg around here at $3.80/gallon) to get the same falue for fuel, you would have to have a car that got fuel equivalency of 123 MPG.

So, 123 MPG, or 560 MPG. Either way my bike kicks ass. Oh, and I spent less to buy the bike than most of you spend on car insurance. Bitches.

It's a great workout. But bringing a skimboard with you would be nearly impossible.

I think you are a little high on your calories. A relatively leisurely ride burns like 300-400 calories an hour depending on your height/weight.

It wasn't a leisurely ride. I was on a road bike and I covered 32 miles in 2 hours. That includes several tough hills, including a 700 foot climb (~1.5 horizontal miles, 7% grade) over a coastal foothill.

yeah but I've never been out west (except once to CO), so it may as well be another country for me. Besides he's on the coast I thought, I didn't think that was exactly desert.

Since this bike thread is better than the last...can I just say that it's pissing me off when I'm riding right up on the curb and passing traffic and the cars in front of me feel the need to go from the center line to riding the curb just to make me slow down.

It's getting really annoying...like it's my fault that being on 2 wheels in Key West is WAY faster than being in a car.

The thing that really gets on my nerves is when their doing like 5mph and I'm cruising at 25ish and I nearly hit them...why do people feel the need to be such dickheads?

    Oh well...at least I'm getting 500mpg w/ my legs.

EDIT: Also hate it when I'm drafting a SUV or minivan and as soon as I pull right up on them to initiate "the slingshot" I see their eyes go straight to the rear view mirror and they slow down.

I'd still say you are probably closer to 800 calories in two hours than you are to 2000, even at a 17mph pace.

That only makes the bike that much more efficient.

This thread is bullshit, chug a gallon of regular unleaded then bike 560 miles and I'll be impressed.

But seriously I need to get my bike game on, driving around the oceanfront in the summer is a fool's game.

it's not driving so much as parking 200 times, 5 ft apart.
