post an example of the long exposures that didn't come out. one thing you have to account for with film is reciprocity failure; the longer you expose it to light, the less sensitive to light the film becomes. If you were trying to do star trails and overexposed, there was probably a closer light source polluting the sky cause I think it's pretty hard to overexpose the sky at night otherwise.

although I feel like you weren't trying star trails? if you're looking at a street light or something like that, a half hour is certainly way too long. example, this was probably at like f/5.6 and 8 seconds on iso 400 film. you were at 200 so you'd have to do a stop more.

I don't know. I want to say no to light pollution because it's pretty dark in my back yard (I live in the country), but it could be the very faint light coming in from the city. I read about about reciprocity failure and increased my exposure time from around 1 hour from the first shot to over 3 for the second and third. I'll try and scan the negatives at work tomorrow if I can and see what's up. If i hold up the negatives to a light, I can see the tree branches on the bottom of one very faintly. The rest are solid orange. It was humid and cold at first during the night, and then got colder. As a result, two times I came out to a camera covered in frost. That could have possibly wrecked the film...but I'm just guessing at this point.

And yes, you're originally right. I was trying star trails. Take two coming soon.

Gabriel very good comp on that shot!

Probably posed this awhile back, but this really makes me want to shoot some more landscape and take a break from Automotive.

least you guys have stuff to shoot. no hot chicks are down for portraits. someone will be eventually. if i wanted to take a photo course, it's a 6-9 lecture on tuesdays. meh. plus there's only 30 seats and they're all taken and sometimes i can't stand certain "art types". But i'm pretty sure the photo people do study abroad to antarctica to photograph penguins, among other things. that would be sick. antarctic skim?

oh an gnip if you had frost on the lens that might make it bad, it'd be like a giant diffusing filter on the front i'd imagine. I'm not sure how that would affect film if the film had condensation on it. also, was this black and white or c-41? orange makes me think c-41 cause I can't remember any black and white films that aren't purple or grey when they're developed and such. also, you're using a 35mm slr yeah?

basically i got lucky, and was in somthing the dude shot, and i just kept in contact. but tons of people i know just email agencys that represent the photograhers they like. and offer to do free work for photogs and shit. and most people end up working for somebody dope.

thats how the other dude there did shit. you just have to email the right people/network your ass off, and you can get into contact with most anyone. nam sayin?

i assisted like 3 or 4 times in july for a guy. that's what gnar said, you just have to email people. i'm certainly doing a lot of assistance in december and january. it helps a lot to understand lighting and how to deal with people in a shoot. you also expand your network, you meet models, designers, make-up artists and other people that might be helpful if you decide to work with photography in the future. not mentioning the possibility to learn directly from a professional, like tips, what's the best light for this or that, softboxes, snoots, etc

gnar, enjoy your assistance and try to learn the most you can with it! i thought about spending some months in new york just to work as an assistant and learn from the pros down there. i mean, rio de janeiro is a nice place to find great professionals, but new york is definitely another level.

nah that looks normal. the mirror flips up when you expose the film so whats dirty is the lens. Or more likely, thats on the negative. Other people don't handle negatives very carefully. plus the scanner always wants to try and get detail in things that don't have any, hence the super grainy sky, although a 3 hour exposure will also do that.

I just went and got soem concentrate for when I go home so i can make new chemicals since I don't think mine have been moved since i've been at school.

Gnar I love the look of those two shots wow.

I meet up with a friend of mine I haven't seen since middle school days and he's a photographer as well so we took out my buddies S5 and took some night shots (have not done shot at night in a verrrry long time)
Small side story, as we were shooting this street bike guy stalls his bike right at us because of staring at the S5 so he stops, walks the bike to the curb and comes up to us and won't stop saying how beautiful and sick the car is. Stayed with us for 20min, we also had the normal people stop and stare at the car and say that it looks good. Fun

developing black and white isnt that hard, you just need the two chemicals and film spool or w.e
I know the chems are different for color
basically all you do is go in a darkroom, open up the film, cut it off the spool, wind it through and close the top.
poor the chemicals in and shake it gently for the depending ISO of the film and temperature of water
pour out and rinse with other chemical and water then dry it out by hanging
