I have the Composer and have used the Control Freak in the past. Dont stick me to it but I got the idea that the Control Freak is a little more accurate and precise, however I love the Composer and it works perfectly fine for me.
Its just very tricky when trying to shoot moving objects and its definitely more fit for still photography.

I forgot who explained this to me earlier in the thread, but this is a toss up question for anyone.

I'm used to filming with a camcorder where zooming and re-focusing is more simultaneous. However, I'm now shooting with a Canon T2i and with that, I do have zoom lenses. Although, I want to be able to capture action at a nice depth of field but the tricky part, is that when the subjects move out of focus, I have to readjust my focus and at the same time, pan to capture the action. I want to be able to keep footage relatively focused but with a nice depth of field without having to readjust my focus so much. Any suggestions?

you could try continuos auto focus i guess. youve probably already tried that but it can sometimes work pretty well if you have a decent cam and lens.

A follow focus seems like the right place to be with it but those can get expensive.

I have a Canon T2i and on that model, auto focus doesn't work while in Live Shoot mode. I believe the 7D and 60D have the capability to refocus while ion movie set up. However, I also have a 85~300mm lens FD to EOS. It's a VERY good lens and has a deep DOF when shooting far away subjects. But, no autofocus and no IS on it. I've tested it out a couple of times with some test footage but I need to find a way to smoothly transition my focus along with panning. It'll be my frist time filming skim footage with the T2i and unlike my HV30 Canon, it's not built to zoom in fast and refocus at the same time like a traditional camcorder. I had planned on getting the HV40 prior to the T2i but the T2i gives me the opportunity to take great shots and get better DOF options with different lenses. And I wasn't going to spend extra $$$ on a RedRock or Letus adapter for the Canon HV40.

the only way to pan and stay in focus is to drop dough on equipment or be a god at doing it hand held. which is nearly impossible.

    ^what he said

That's why shooting dslrs for action is tough. Or, be strategic and almost intentional with you subject and the dof. i.e., pick a section where the waves are breaking, focus there and lock your camera on a tripod. as subject approaches lip of wave they automatically rack focus, you look like a boss.

    or raise you aperture.

i've done it before not while filming but shooting photos. my shots always come out focused so I'm thinking it's the same technique. You just have to get used to it. A tripod would probably help. I did it with a bronica with no tripod so you can probably do it with a dslr. But my lenses have really slow focus rings, really smooth as well so it goes nice and smooth. my canon lenses don't so that might make it harder.

I've seen people get some sort of thing that goes around the focus ring and has a lever so you can more precisely, and more slowly change focus.
something like that. I used a big shoulder mount panasonic camera and it had one built in and it made focusing a breeze while following moving subjects. and the longer the lever the slower you can move.

I've been into (well, reading about) abandoned places and am trying to find one near me that's still accessible. The stories behind these, whether true or false, are fairly interesting. Like old insane asylums and old schools. Anyone else able to go to any or hear anything about them?

This is what one of my photography professors did, she had some awesome looking photography of abandoned buildings. If I find some of her work I'll post it up.
