myspace is lame...but o-well
Not really. All it would take is a dedicated film crew, travel money, and a flexible schedule. Hurricanes are normally the worst for skimming, and talent is everywhere.
during a hurricane at peak wind yes it wouldnt be smart to skim....
on the gulf....hurricane is near texas/mexico area.Cat 3-5ish Light east wind...and overcasted.
go to the beach then tell me the skim isnt good. I can bet you will find good skim if you look at the right time and right spot. Thats when you need to film not the ankle to knee high bullshit line unless you do something really good on it. Just like in a skate movie you dont see pro skaters doin kickflip to manual on a little ledge just because anyone can do that. Same with a 3 shuv on a ankle high wave. Its old and been done.

What I mean is, normally hurricanes bring surf, not skim. Usually the beaches are torn up and it's breaking 3 feet overhead 200 yards out.
I'm not familiar with Gulf coast way of things.
Anton, i got a couple pics of you charging this monster last sunday. they're in the vilano pic thread if you wanna check em out.

Nope. You should really only film for a year or two at most. The footage gets old, people have see the clips somewhere else and they lose their value.Originally Posted by Mac Na Bow 101
Nope. You just need to have people watch swells and their breaks, and let you know when it's gonna be good, adn then you travel. That's where the dedication comes in.Originally Posted by Mac Na Bow 101
Not neccessarily. Actually you just need good skimboarders, whether they are "pros" or not. It definately helps to have those people who have recognizable names, but as long as you have good, stylish skimmers on good quality waves doing good tricks, people will wana see it.Originally Posted by Mac Na Bow 101
This is the most important part. you need dedication above all of that other stuff. dedication and time and especially people who will travel 7 hours on a hunch to sit there for hours and do nothing but film, focusing on making sure they get original and creative angles of the best rides in good conditions.Originally Posted by Mac Na Bow 101
Also, remember: Florida is not California. It's not Cabo, or Portugal or Chile; It's Florida.
How does this thing work?
the few years thing made me chuckle a bit too.
i think it's stemming from the "gotta wait for those hurricane swells" theory to get footage that is good enough to include in an all florida video.

I agree, but i think its more of a "gotta wait for those hurricane swells" so you can get gulf footage that people won't hate on, and getting those swells will take years. The recent vilano pictures thread looks epic, and I don't think there was was a hurricane, unless i missed the memo. And if someone had the discipline to sit out during all those sessions, I think there would be some very respectable footage, even by cali standards. And hey, maybe someone did sit out just to capture some good florida skim, but I guess we won't know untill it comes out.Originally Posted by 4evrskm::Derek
I'm guessing this thread stemmed from the ABH opinion thread, and I can't see why Mac Na Bow felt the need to make this. Nobody called out derek's filming/editing abilities, he just got unlucky with the conditions/beaches, and the other kid voiced his opinion about it.
This thread should be: "to capture really good gulf footage, of pro's, that falls between June 1 and November 30 ." Then you've got yourself an informative thread.

I think it takes a few years to make a truly good video period. Cali, cabo, whereever. You want to see the best of the best from the location.Originally Posted by 4evrskm::Derek
that takes time.
We wait for epic swells to film on the west coast, I dont really understand why east coast would be any different....? And I certainly dont understand why a statement about it would be funny?
the chuckling (not laughing, peluso, totally different) was more about how a lot of people in florida seem to think that if the quality of waves isn't somehow competing with cabo, then it shouldn't make it into a movie...and that the reasoning behind waiting three years is to wait for hurricane swells or freak swells that might somehow parallel those conditions.

..and because they NEVER will. EVER.Originally Posted by 4evrskm::Derek
see that? I live in Florida and love skimboarding here, but our waves will NEVER compare, size- or strength-wise , to California or Cabo.

I thought you filmed Bearded in less than 3 years? imo, that was a truly good skimboard film.Originally Posted by Aaron Peluso
Hasn,t vilano been going off. i hope its been filmed because from the pictures it looks Californiaish. From that it would seem it was fairly decent for a movie. Florida is so unpredictable even more so on the gulf. Face it the west coast you are pretty much guaranteed good waves . Where over here we have 4 weeks of flatness broken by a tiny knee high windswell. Although this winter has had some fairy good ground swell. If we want to film a movie of all the good days in Florida that could take any where from a year to 3 or 4. This past year wasn't all to great especially the summer.

my point isnt to take footy and post it...when i say years to make one it would be collecting footage and not showing anyone that isnt helping you edit. The point to make a badass movie is to save footy and release it when you promote it. Im not talking about making a big profit or any at all. Im saying if i would of collected footy for the past 2 years of the good skim and tricks ive seen and then put them all in one. Many people would think diffenrent about the gulf. So many people think its weak....well there right. We do get freak swells though that can get intense. Though with the weakness of are waves it seems to me more floridian and east coast people have to learn a certain style or way to ride the waves. I personaly have never seen anyone come to the gulf from powerful laguna and cabo, but i would deff have to say it would be a big change for them and they would have to learn how to ride a weaker wave with less push.
My point to this post is to back up florida. Florida does get good. Trust me...it just isnt consistant. What we lack is such bull shit If mexico was never there we would be crankin swell 24/7

Watching guys charge waves is sick, don't get me wrong.
But wrap after wrap after wrap...
I like to see tech stuff too.
IMO you don't have to have "epic" waves to make an entertainig movie.

I think a properly executed FL video would probably be more interesting that "another" cali video. Even for me, out here in Cali. But you gotta film the spots when they are at their best.
I think a good video really needs a lot of different spots. What I've noticed is that a lot of skim videos are great they just are really only filmed in a handful of locations. I know this is real difficult and expensive, but getting a wide variety of spots, east coast, west coast, and other countries, would definately result in an awesome video, given the right amount of time and effort. I'm sure it will happen in the future though.
