HD editing

for those of you into editing, for a high definition camera, will firewire suffice? or do i need to look into a new card/interface for an HD input?

it wont be enough .. you need a card like a kona board and a p2 card reader or an hd deck....either way its gunna cost you a lot of money

i'm not about to buy avid's mojo or anything like that...what do you suggest for a cheaper hd card? or what do you use?

oh. and i got a firewire cable, but i'm having another problem now. it captures fine in premiere pro 2.0, but when i play it back in the monitor, the frames freak out and the video starts shaking like none other. i tried capturing in DV instead of HDV, and it did the same thing. so, i went and found the file on my computer and played it in windows media player. the video played fine, but no audio. any ideas? i'm getting really pissed with premiere.

you arent gunna get hd with anything cheaper than 10 grand

when you say you "aren't gonna get hd" for cheaper than 10 grand, what are you basing that on? there are many different routes to take with high definition that are cheaper than 3000$, granted that you already have a good computer.

ok maybe its more like 9 thousand but still a decent hunk of change
Kona board in order to handle it 1500 bucks
a real 1080i HD camera least 3 grand probably more like 5
a p2 card reader 1300 dollars and 100 bucks a pop for the cards which by the way only hold 11 minutes so you will probably wanna get an external drive to archive it with since hd file size is huge. However that drive is definately not fast enough to access it for editing or anything like that so you might wanna consider a SATA drive Id at least get 300 gb which will run you around 400 bucks

or if you go the tape route you can spend
50grand on a d5 deck.....and thats a cheap one.

it does cost 10k or more for the whole setup plus when your done theres the added bonus of "no realistic way to distribute hd footage"

I was looking at getting an FX-1 but was quickly discouraged once I realized the total cost of actually producing HD footage....so I bought a new digicam.


So, are you saying you cannot capture HD on miniDV on these supposed HD cameras? Those P2 cards cost more than $100. They're expensive as shit.

i'm saying i cannot capture HD in adobe premiere. i also can't capture DV. my camera, sony hcr-hc3, can also convert the HDV to DV for capture. i tried this as well as HD capture, and the frames still shook all over the place in playback. however, when i captured in DV, the file played in windows media player fine. i don't need a 10k setup. i have a custom computer, 1500$ camera, premiere pro, and a firewire card. it's waht i've used since my first DV camera, and it works fine when editing on my friend's computer(exact same setup).

HD capture isnt working cause you probably dont have the hardware to do.
As for shaking in DV it sounds like you are having pulldown issues.Check to make sure what framerate you recorded in and wether it is progressive scan or interlace and then check you capture settings/project settings to make sure they match.
