Default I really hate to ask this question...

My son wants a board for Christmas.

He is currently riding an "el cheapo" tourist sand skimming board, you guys know the kind.

He needs one that will be great for the sand, but begin to transition him to deeper water.
I've done research on grom boards, but an experienced opinion is better than sales propaganda.

He is almost 9 yrs old and 60 lbs.

What is a decent board for him, not too expensive?

What did some of you ride at that age?

I think that SOL pin looks good for a nice start. Oh and your grom and Tx need to have a skim contest.

vic foamie is a good way to go, or even find a used 3/4ths board.

i would say a zap wedge, it is a great board for transitioning from sand skimming to wave riding, i actually hav 2
and i think that they are priced very well for themselves
The J-Gordon Retro Fish is the nicest board I've ever ridden.

If you decide on a Zap Wedge go down to Destination Surf Shop on Padre Island they sell Zap Wedges or if you go down to Port A go to Momentum Surf Shop they are also a Zap carrier and have plenty of wedge boards. The guys are really great over there and will get you going on a nice board for your son if you chose a Zap.

I would go with the ZapWedge.

Seems to last a little longer than the foamie.

I think the Sol Pin Small is a good suggestion. You also want to take a look at the Wedge Medium as someone else mentioned. Both are alittle oversized for his weight but probally fine due to the fact that he wants to into waveriding.

Also take a look at the Victoria Grommet Large, which might be your best bet. It has a narrower shape when compared to the Zap and Wedge. This would be easier for him to handle and give him a board that is more geared towards wave riding versus the wider, more sandskimming oriented Pin and Wedge.

    Hope that helps.

He has been skimming like a mad man, every time we go to the beach.
He really likes the tech stuff that he sees in the mini-vids from florida.
He wants to, and has been learning some tech stuff... minor stuff, he is only 9 almost, because to him its like "skateboarding on waves".

He is not as crazy about watching the flatland stuff, and the big waves from Cali are scary to him. So mentally he is more geared to the stuff in the gulf... for now.

Sounds like you are gonna have a great lil skimmer. I would go with the Wedge for now its affordable and seems to be a great beginner board. I think they run around 165 on the Island.

    It has been decided...

I went with the Sol Pin (small)... ordered just now.
$124 (No shipping due to holiday deal at Skimshop )

The Sol just seemed to be better for him at this point.

Thanks everyone, you guys are cool

On his it won't work as well.

I got him a white board so that he can draw on it and stuff.

    "Grom Art"?

I'll post it on the "Show your board" thread when it comes in.
