What have you done to help your sport

I liked to think I helped progress flatland skimboarding through:

-building some of the first constructed rails in Sacramento

-building the zen garden for friends to ride when the river was unskimmable

-giving away dozens of boards and swag

-traveling to spread the word

-assisting lon and mark on competitions

-always being cool to groms and giving them wisdom about riding and the sport itself

-spending lots of money on shirts, stickers, web, rails, media equipment, etc.

-internet exposure: inlandskim.com, tons of emails, vids, pictures, etc.

-keeping the river clean

and some other stuff

Oh, and to answer the thread (since Benny suggested it), here's a few minor things I've done..

• Joined this message board
• Got my friends into skimming
• Made movies
• Respected tourist, fisherman and shell gazers
• Supplied equipment for local skim comps and frequented many contests for support
• Bought quite a few boards, tons of movies, subscriptions to mags, clothing, etc
• With the movies, had mini-premieres for friends to get stoked
• Taught a few people (old & young) how to skim

Lastly, in the event someone is unsure of where Skimboarding has progressed (flatland is still skimming but can cause many misconceptions), I keep Bearded (and others) on my phone to give someone a real view into where skimming is today. You'd be amazed at how many people light up with interest after seeing those movie clips

I got 3 people into it. Bought a buncha stuff from skim city ( 2 boards, Bearded, countless pads, wax, everglide, etc.)

I don't know where you are finding these locals at. When I go to the beach here, I only see groms sand skimming. I go out usually 2X a week and have never seen you or any of the others on here that claim to be from Corpus.

As far as board sports here are concerned, it seems to be all about surfing and kiteboarding (which I think is cool).

I wish there were some skimmers here because I would enjoy having someone to skim with.

Well apparently we don't skim the same spots. I have only been out two or three times this year only because I live an hour and a half away from the Island. I have seen a lot of groms at Bob Hall but I have seen a hand full of locals there too. I have seen two wave skimmers but mostly sand skimmers. I have not seen the two guys who skimmed the waves the last few times I was there though. One was on a Zap and the other had a Victoria Ultra.

Well apparently we don't skim the same spots. I have only been out two or three times this year only because I live an hour and a half away from the Island. I have seen a lot of groms at Bob Hall but I have seen a hand full of locals there too. I have seen two wave skimmers but mostly sand skimmers. I have not seen the two guys who skimmed the waves the last few times I was there though. One was on a Zap and the other had a Victoria Ultra.

I check Bob Hall Pier every time I go out, still never see anyone.

Bob Hall Pier = Flat
JP Luby = Oil Sludge
Caldwell = Flat

Fish Pass (my break) = best slope and best waves, still not what most here would call a shore break but reachable with a good board at high tide

Big Shell = killer shore break, but you cant skim it because the entire beach is very large (and sharp) crunched up shells. you will kill your board and feet.

So where else is there to skim???

I think growth and publicity is inevitable. At some point you have to embrace it and support your sport, even if your contributions are minor. But you don't necessarily need to spread the word. Just purchase product

I take friends skimming constantly, buy local brand skimboards/clothes etc. I TRY to take pictures , and I would LOVE to make a nice video but no camera.

You guys need to stop listing 'buying boards..dvds...pads' as what you have done to help the sport. You bought that stuff because you wanted it. So you could use it. Its not like you made a donation to exile or astrodeck.

One of the best things we can all do is to not be too cool to help groms and answer kook tourist questions. I get so annoyed when some tourist asks, "what kind of surf board is that" but I try (not always succeed) to answer without sarcasm/attitude. The more people that know WHAT skimboarding really is the better. When people claim to know what skimming is, I explain how beginner skimming is the sand sliding and advanced skimming is what they are seeing (wave riding and airs).

Another great way is to invite other board sport kids to watch skim videos. I have hosted two premieres and can't tell you how many kids say, "I didn't know you could do that on a skimboard! Where can I buy one of those?"

What I have done: I run a free skim school in the summer. Anyone is welcome to come but it is mostly for young kids. I bring about 20 skimboards to the beach and they all get used because over 1/2 of the kids have never been on a board. We end up teaching about 50-80 kids to skim for the very first time each year. We encourage them to stay with it so that they don't quit just because it is hard. Another way we help the sport is by getting girls into it. We have two awesome female instructors and they pull about 30 girls a week to the skim school. Talk about advancing the sport! I also donate invite people to contests every year. I guess that's it.

I have drawn large crowds by running fast as lightning down the beach dropping my board and misstepping, shooting my board like a bullet in one direction, while I go tumbling violently into the water in the opposite direction. Then I tell people that I'm skimboarding and that it's a great spectator sport whether you're good at it or whether you suck. People hang around to see if I'm going to kill myself in spectacular fashion again.

Oh yeah, and I got my 11 year old into it. Passing it on to the next generation.
