Default What have you done to help your sport

    This comes courtesy of BennyRay...

A simple question, what have you personally done to help or contribute to skimming? From the major (started a company, hosted a contest, funding) to the minor (brought a friend skimming, taught a little kid a trick, made a video on youtube). Think about it, then post.

Are you helping your sport grow?
    Do you care?

bought items from companies. dvds, board bags, boards, wax...everyone pretty much does that but without them there is no skimboarding.

And i try to answer people in this forum with knowledgeable responses on where to buy/whats better/what does this mean...i usually keep the sarcasm out of those type of answers.

One major thing that seems minor is helped eliminate the misconception that skimboarding is sliding across sand. Telling tourists/friends that there is a lot more to the sport and talking with them about it. Id say at least 75% of people only know skimboarding as sandsliding when i mention it. Its always "o i love to skimboard. It hurts to fall though when the board slides from under you. My brother has a board when we go on vacation i have a blast"...its usually immediately apparent they are sliding on standing water.

Good question though. In my opinion, growth for the sport within the community is great, but to most people established in the sport growth would be negative if it was outside of the community. Its great for new companies to emerge, contests to occur, video to be produced...all to those in the sport...Conversely, most growth media wise those in the sport would view as negative because no one wants a crowded beach.

I have taken a few of my friends skimboarding and talked about skimboarding with other people who ask me what it was I was doing. Told them where they could purchase a skimboard there on the Island. Nothing major but I have been seeing a lot more locals get into skimboarding.

photos, videos, buying stuff like that...

every time i see kids just learning to skim at the beach, i always ask if they have any questions, and try to help. usually end up trying to help them with their drop etc.

that main thing i'm working on is skimboarding in colleges. i think that's one area we're way behind, and i'm doing my best to change that...

I don't know where you are finding these locals at. When I go to the beach here, I only see groms sand skimming. I go out usually 2X a week and have never seen you or any of the others on here that claim to be from Corpus.

As far as board sports here are concerned, it seems to be all about surfing and kiteboarding (which I think is cool).

I wish there were some skimmers here because I would enjoy having someone to skim with.

The only thing that I have done for the sport so far is to buy boards and vids, (and try to get Wind and Wave Surf Shop to understand that WZ boards are crap, carry conCept, or Zap.)

My big plan for contribution is to learn to skim well, so I can represent the sport well.

Taught a lot of kids how to skim, some still skim.

Made videos, although they arent good they still show how the skim is in Bahamas.

Gave my little cousin one of the cutouts from our homemade woodie, which he used to cut other boards for kids.

Usually talk to anyone, or initiate conversation with anyone coming on the beach with a skimboard, or anyone interested.

Nothing....absolutely nothing. Nor do I feel the need to do so.

What I do do is to buy skimboarding related products and go skimming. I make friends and have a good time and tell anybody that asks what it is I love to do so much.
