that really sucks. part of me thinks that people like myself shouldnt rip off artists, but its not like any musician goes into music to make money, and if you are in music only for the money, then i dont really feel that bad about stealing your music.

that sucks. it sould suck so much if one day i come home to find out i've been sued for $220000. i'd just leave the country or something. this always happens to people in the middle-lower classes (she's a single mother), it seems as if the poor get poorer

I suspect she doesn't either AND the RIAA knows that - they'll likely reduce her fine having accomplished showing that these things CAN and WILL be prosecuted. I bet in the final disposition a small fine and some community service will be all.

The defense was fracking weak - they were actually trying to argue that she didn't do it. Even with her IP, her email, her username (which was the same she used on other services).

What the prosecution showed was that by posting them on a P2P service, it clearly showed intent to redistribute copyrighted material.

Bands don't even make very much money off albums. Majority of money made by touring. RIAA is garbage.

I think the penalty of over 9 grand per song is absolutely ridiculous... The jury could have gone as low as $7.25 per song, and they chose to hit her with 9 grand per song!!?? Next thing you know our country will be adopting the "if you steal you get your hand cut off" approach to dealing with criminals...

There was a story like this one about a year ago that I saw on tv. It was a man in his 30's that had wireless internet and lived in an apartment building. The thing was though he paid for everyone of his songs through Itunes. The rest of the apartment buildings tenants were raping his wireless and stealing songs. He had over 100,000 songs downloaded on his IP adress and he got charged with over $1,000,000. He later faught it and won showing that his computer didnt even have those songs and that it must have been someone else in the apartment building. I guess he was lucky to actually have records of his songs that were bought.

I feel bad for the woman in this case. Thats why you dont fight major record companies with million dollar lawyers if you know youve done wrong. She could have gotten away with paying a small fee out of court. Shes an idiot twice.
